[Update] Important updates to your coupons in Square Online

Hi Sellers! 👋

We announced earlier this year that Square Online coupons are moving to Square Marketing, our email marketing tool. With the help of the feedback shared by many of you here, we have added to the coupon features supported by Square Marketing and streamlined the migration process to be faster for most sellers.

Here are some of the improvements we’ve made:

  • Expanded coupon code support to include long codes and special characters—e.g., underscores and dashes
  • Added support for “100% off” coupons that apply to the entire sale
  • Added option to limit the number of times a coupon can be redeemed (coming soon)
  • Added option to limit the number of times a customer can use a coupon (coming soon)
  • Added option to restrict a coupon to sales over a certain amount (coming soon)
  • Supported coupons will be automatically migrated, with no changes required
  • Improved the in-product experience for reviewing and updating coupons

Beginning in late August or early September (depending on your current coupons), you will manage your coupons from Square Marketing for use across your Square Online site and Square Marketing campaigns. Here’s what’s changing:

  • New coupons: Any new coupons need to be created in Square Marketing, not your Square Online dashboard.
  • Existing coupons: For coupons created in Square Online, most coupon types will be automatically migrated to Square Marketing.
  • Coupon changes: Some coupons will work differently after the migration. Other coupons will no longer be supported and need to be updated before they can migrate. You can learn more about these changes here

Once the migration is complete, we will notify you within Square Online Coupons which of your coupons need attention. You will have until October 2, 2024 to update any unsupported coupons. To help ensure the best experience for your customers, we recommend aligning your coupon marketing to reflect any new coupon features or limitations.

Be sure to review any emails you've received from Square about these changes to see how they apply to your account and the date they take effect.

We appreciate your continued trust as we work to streamline your Square product experience. Read more about our product changes and how they benefit your business, and if you have any questions, please comment below or contact customer support.

Thank you for the update, it is very much appreciated. Can you please clarify what "Added support for “100% off” coupons that apply to the entire sale" means? I just attempted to create a Marketing coupon for 100% off again and it still does not allow me to do this, so I would really like to know more about what this means and how we can apply it?

Hi @BradenSQ Can you please give an estimate of time frame for the "coming soon" features? weeks, months, years?

These are very basic functionalities that are currently available on Square Online (and every single competing ecommerce platform - I checked). Without limiting usage or minimum sale we simply cannot use any coupons at all.

I urge you to wait with the transition until these "coming soon" features are ready as well. This is hurting the small businesses that are the backbone Square's users base.

Over the last couple of years Square keeps making changes that hurt their users (invoice fee, gift card fees, refunds fees, limiting online platform functions). I've already started looking into other platforms that give these and other features for free but Square charges extra for.  This recent change looks like the last straw for me.

Hi @mkhellman! Hm, good question. It looks like support for "100% off entire sale" Marketing coupons is actually still in final testing before we release it, so I should have marked that as "coming soon" as well. Our team is planning to launch that option in the next 1-2 weeks, and we will make sure it is in place before we begin automatically migrating any coupons. Sorry for the confusion!

Once it's released, you'll be able to create a Marketing coupon with a "Free" coupon type, and set it to apply to the "Entire Sale," which will be equivalent to a "100% off" coupon in Square Online.

Hi @Tommer1! We plan to release these "coming soon" features within the next few weeks.

And we agree that these are important capabilities. For anyone that is using these coupon features in Square Online today, we will indeed wait on their transition to Marketing until the features are available.

I appreciate your feedback, and understand your frustration with the changes. If it helps, this coupon migration is part of a broader effort to make it easier to manage your online and in-person sales together, eliminating repetitive workflows and saving sellers time—more information here. I hope that you stick with us!

Hi @BradenSQ Thank you for the reply. That is excellent news. I would recommend communicating that in the product update.

@BradenSQ Thank you for the update, it will be really nice to have all the coupons and vouchers in marketing section.

I note that some of the coupon functionality found in Weebly is not available in the Marketing, do you know if there is a plan to bring the same functionality across. It would be great to have the best of both world in one! Thank you  💪

why are these updates not being EMAILED TO US? this whole categories and square online fiasco is absolutely ridiculous.

My understanding is now category-specific coupons will only apply to one item (the most expensive).  So does that mean we can no longer have a category sale (for example, 10% of all Baubles)?  That is a miss for us.  We should have the option to toggle to one item or the entire category.

For years I have offered the following coupon codes to my clients:

If they spend $60+, they can use a coupon to get $5 off.

If they spend $90+, they can use a coupon to get $10 off.

If they spend $120+, they can use a coupon to get $15 off.

It appears that the option to create coupon codes for "Orders Over a Certain Amount" is missing.  This is a serious issue for my business and needs to be rectified.  Please let me know what we need to do get this sent to those in charge to correct this issue.

A way you an redeem coupons in-person would be fantastic

I'm a little late to the game, but will there be an update to allow people to use coupons on top of automatic discounts?  I have a standing discount that if they buy 3 items from a list, they get a discount on them.  I would like to give out coupons to people who buy in person to encourage them to shop online, but can't offer that because any coupons negate the automatic discounts. To see what the automatic discount is, you can view at www.statisticallyblessed.com.
