Split a single item

Split a single item

Allow us to split an item on a check. This used to be annoying, now my staff are using it as a way to steal from me. I will be switching to Toast if there is not a fix soon. This SIMPLE feature that is basic on every other restaurant POS has been requested for years.

Re: Split a single item - Status changed to: Needs Beta Testers

Hi @AlexMPH - you're absolutely right! @makedonas, same to you. I had too many tabs open and was trying to update too many things at once and made a mistake. This feature is in beta. I'll go back and edit my previous post too. Thanks for tagging me!

Re: Split Check by Seat Number - Restaurant POS

Thanks for the loop in, @AndySQ.

Hey @Jtay, I want to thank you for your honestly. The item splitting feature has been a long-standing feature request from sellers such as yourself, and I empathise with the frustration of its absence while being commonplace on other platforms. I can also see why not being able to organise seats within a bill would disrupt your day-to-day operations and your staff.

Item splitting is firmly on our roadmap, and our team is actively working towards implementing it. Unfortunately, we don't have a specific timeline for its release at the moment, but we will be sure to be in touch whenever this feature can be tested or released on the Square for Restaurants platform.

I have shared your feedback with our product teams in the meantime. Feedback like yours above helps us determine how we can prioritise new features for Square's payment platform.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Re: Split Check by Seat Number - Restaurant POS

Looping in @AdrianaPortillo and @k_atie, who are working on our Split by Seat Beta and may be able to give a better idea of when you'll have access to more options for splitting tickets by seat and handling larger groups with more complex needs.

While I don't think that split by seat on its own will hit all of the requests that have come up in this thread, it is a step in the right direction.

It may not always feel like it but threads like this do make a difference, and we recognize that it puts you and your staff in a difficult position when our software doesn't meet their expectations.

I'm sorry that it's taken this long to make progress, and that there's still more work to be done to tick all of these boxes, but thank you for your patience and for reiterating how important these features are for you and so many other businesses that use Square for Restaurants.

Re: Split Check by Seat Number - Restaurant POS

@Jtay Thanks for pointing out these gaps in Square for Restaurants that you'd like to see filled, and for being so unequivocal.  These are relatively small changes that would make a big difference, especially for businesses like yours!

All of these updates are being worked on by our product team, and unvarnished points of view like these from real folks do inform how and when we release new options.  Part of my job here is to amplify and share input like this to the right ears. 👂

I don't blame you for being cynical, especially in a thread that's been open for this long - But I hope we'll have good news for yourself and the other folks that need more options for handling items and seat-linked tickets in the future.

Every other pos already has this, tried it, error tested it. It’s a very commonly used feature. We use it multiple times a day. I am running through a test run of the software hoping to make the change but my servers all ran into this road block and said no way to the change if it can’t do that simple task.

Creating an entire second list of every item for multiple splits...ie 1/2 fries, 1/3 fries, 1/4 fries is an absurd solution.

I can’t imagine its a complicated programming situation.

The inability to split a single item (i.e. a bottle of wine for the table; an appetizer for the table; *anything* the table wants to share) is RIDICULOUS. This has been hounding us for a year as we struggled to use Square at our restaurant, while patiently waiting for Square for Restaurants to be released in Canada. Then, hallelujah! Square for Restaurants is available! We can now split items ordered for the table... NOT. Come on Square, this is the equivalent to 10 minutes of programming, if that, and customers have been asking for this VERY SIMPLE, STANDARD INDUSTRY FEATURE for YEARS! I am both shocked and baffled by your "roadmap". Is the left hand talking to the right over there? **VERY** disappointed, as the inability to split a single item on Square for Restaurants is an absolute deal breaker. I'll give it a couple more weeks, but then I'm afraid I'm moving to Silverware. THAT is HOW IMPORTANT this feature is!

My movement on this?

This does not help in restaurants at all. Lets say two friends come in for dinner, share an app, but want the app split, half on each of their checks. Right now we have to void the item, and re ring as an open-keyed priced item half the item price twice. This is annoying. Please add a feature where we can split items. If this feature already exists, please let me know! Thanks. Love square!

Hey Square, I concur with those above that splitting a single item in the RESTAURANT business is HUGE... we are just converting over to SfR and my staff on day one was .... how do we do this??? Hmmmm... this and House Accounts is HUGE in our industry! Please!

I'm going to keep reposting this until it gets DONE, as this is a glaring feature omission in Square for Restaurants that makes NO SENSE... restaurateurs have been asking for this since 2018.. 🤔 no more canned responses, please. Please tell your dev team to spend the ten minutes minutes needed to get this done. Thanks. Read on:

How to split individual items on billing:- i.e. bottle wine shared between 2-3 people

We are looking to split a shared item which happens a lot on larger tables.

Shared appies, bottles of wine etc..

This will be a huge issue if there isn't an easy fix!!!

Hi @Blusaff Thanks for reaching out, and welcome to the Community! 🎉

I moved your post over to this thread, but it's not possible to split a single item equally onto more than one check at this time.

I also think this is a basic feature for restaurants that customers have come to expect you can do without blinking. Square for Restaurants should implement it ASAP, in my opinion. I can understand Square POS being slow to move on something like this but Square for Restaurants needs it if it really wants to offer a POS for Restaurants. That feature is industry standard. Square really needs to focus some resources on practical restaurant functionality. People have been asking for a few basic features for some time now. I like square but please help us and our staff out with some of the important basic restaurant specific stuff.

Been trying to move to Square for Restaurants but finding it lacks some much needed functionality. We can't split a menu item (into 2 or 3) when splitting a bill, so when a party comes in and orders, say, a bottle of wine or a pitcher of beer, one person gets stuck footing the bill for it.

Seems like this feature request has been around for years:

Is Square going to address it? If not, we'll likely have to look at a different POS.
