Password Required for "(null)"

One of my iPads keeps populating with a message every time I open Square for Restaurants that says:

Password Required for "(null)"

and then asks for a user name and password. I've tried various different Square User names and passwords, I've tried my iCloud user name and password... Nothing works.  I tried calling Square customer service and they told me to update the app. Tried that, didn't fix it. I also made sure the iOS was updated, not that - didn't fix it. It's just the one iPad. I have 2 other iPads in my restaurant and they aren't having this issue.

I don't even know WHY I try calling customer service because they NEVER help me and I always know more about their system then they do. Alas. Has anyone else had this issue?

@Eda0617 While I haven’t had this exact issue before, I’ve had similar vexing issues.  So far, the nuclear option has always worked, which is to totally delete the app from your iPad and reinstall it.  Often when issues like this happen, it is because something in the app’s sandbox (which contains its data and settings) has been corrupted and the only thing that works is this nuclear option.  Just updating the app retains the app’s data/settings, including any that might be corrupted, which seems to be what is happening in your case.

Give that a try and let me know if it doesn’t work. Or if it does! Ha.

Hi,

This has just started happening to me in the last week. We did as Square suggested and it worked for a few days but now it is back. We only have 1 Ipad with Square POS. Today we deleted the app, reinstalled and reset everything else, checked everything had the latest updates and it worked for a bout 2 hours and now it is back again. Any other suggestions as this is driving us mad!

I saw the Aussie flag by your screen name! Lol. That’s always a handy piece of info, though. Anyway….

My apologies for the back and forth here. But are you sure this is a square error message and not an iPadOS message? That message you are getting can have OS-related causes — things like corrupted saved passwords, for example, or problems with the Apple ID used to set up the iPad.

Could you take a screen shot with the error message and post it here?

This is starting to sound like you might need to try the iPad nuclear option. Factory reset and set it up from scratch again. If there’s an iPad setting corruption, that’s about all that might fix it.

Hi Chip,

So we spent the rest of the day having to tap cancel every 3 seconds just to use the Square app.  This only started last week when we started using Square and it only appears when we are using it, saying that at the end of day yesterday I deleted a load of unused apps (we don't have much on there anyway) and left the bare essentials. I deleted the Square app and cleared history and cache and updated anything that needed updating then reinstalled Square and (fingers crossed) it has not reappeared. We are also having internet issues so I am looking into changing provider as well. Photo is attached and I will let you know how the next few days go. If it happens again I will do the iPad nuclear option. Thanks for your help.

You’re welcome. That’s why we are here!

Thanks for the screen shot. That is definitely an iPadOS prompt. It’s generic and can be triggered by not only OS functions but also by apps that use core OS functionality.

There  “null” should be replaced by a function name, app name, library routine or whatever is needing user authorization.

The point is it is not necessarily directly Square related but anything  is possible.  I’ve seen stranger coincidences.  If it returns after what you’ve done I’m betting the iPad nuclear option will fix it. It’s a good bet you have a ghost lurking in your iPad somewhere.

This seems to be directly related to our Epson printer used to print orders and receipts.

I'm having the same issue and finding it's related to one of our epson printers, whenever I configure it, this starts happening. Did you find a resolution? I've wiped our ipad and updated to latest ios, reinstalled square, so far nothing.

Just to follow up, I believe this is actually related to iPadOS version. We have a new ipad running 16.6 with no issue, we have 2 ipads recently upgraded to version > 17 that has this occur. Maybe a bug with the newest version comms with the square printer interfacing.

That was my assessment, too, @garrisoncity.  Not sure what Apple did but….

Hi All,

Fortunately for me I did everything that Chip said and we have not had an issue since, I did do the full IPad reset but I also think partly mine was also an internet provider issue as we are in a very bad area. Sorry I can't be of anymore help. We have had a connection issue with Square the last 24 hours so I hope things won't change.

Hi all, our iPad got disconnected from the Epson kitchen printer (model TM-M30) yesterday and the same message window started to pop out whenever we tried to use Square Restaurant after I tried to reconnect the printer by searching the IP address. Haven't try the nuclear method but instead entered the username: epson and password is its serial number, now it works fine. Will keep everyone updated when new problem appears.
