How can I sort checks alphabetically?

There is an option to sort checks alphabetically, but only with assigned customers. How do we sort alphabetically without assigning customers, as we don't collect guest information and this adds an extra step anyway. Why isn't this already a standard function?

You're misunderstanding me completely. We are entering the names of the tabs ourselves manually AND capturing names from the card. But we aren't going to the "assign guests" and assigning their personal information that square captures. That is an extra step we don't need.

I have actually found the answer to this and it's simple but annoying. On your orders screen in Square Restaurants, it default selects the page that says "Active, Scheduled, Completed." The page you want is one category down and has the options, "Open, Paid, Closed." This screen will let you sort all tabs by name, regardless of whether it has guest information attached from square's database. It is also beneficial when you are closing tabs at the end of the night, as all tabs in the "paid" category are awaiting tips, while you're open tabs are just the ones that have no payments.

In the "Active, Scheduled, Completed" page it will keep tabs in the active page even if you've entered the tips already, making it extremely confusing. Now I just wish there was an option to reorder the order screen so that the "Open, Paid, Closed" is the default page instead of "Active, Scheduled, Completed."

Candlestore, thanks for your help here. I don't think I made myself clear enough to give you the ability to answer what I was asking, but I appreciate you!

You can not sort them Alphabetically if you do not assign customers to the checks.  When a customer pays, they do not always pay by Credit Card so then they check could not be sorted alphabetically.  Another thing is lately I have been seeing some Credit Cards are just showing Visa User as a Name instead of the persons name.  I also realized that when I get a New Credit card I am asked if I want my if shared between Partners and I select NO.  Then I tried my credit card once and I was now a Visa Card holder for example.  This might be why Square is not collecting, the customers name any more because of the Card Holder prefrences not to share thier information with Partners.

Why do you not take peoples names when they order to add it to a ticket later?

We’re a volume neighborhood bar so we have a lot of regulars who we don’t take their card until they pay, and we don’t feel comfortable capturing their information from a card without consent. We manually name the tabs if the card doesn’t pull the information. The function should be able to sort these tabs alphabetically like every other system I’ve worked with prior whether there is a customer assigned or not. Also, having to assign a guest from the database is an added unneccessary step for us and just slows down service. Hope this is in the pipeline.

Help me understand how a system is to sort by name, any system, if no one is assigned.

  • The function should be able to sort these tabs alphabetically like every other system I’ve worked with prior whether there is a customer assigned or not.

What is in this case Square going to sort by?  Now do I agree that the Ticket should be sorted by a Name given to the Ticket when saved, instead of just by the Time Stamp or at least have this ability, Yes.  I am more so trying to understand what to sort tickets by when No name is given to the Ticket.   You do not take the card to get a name from the card, take the order and do not enter the name.  So how is a POS suppose to sort this ticket by Customer name when None was given is the problem I am having.   This is probably why alot of resturaunts and Bars now have Numbers for the Table or seating at a Bar.  So insted of assigning Customer Name they give Seat or Table Number to find tickets quicker.

Also When are you trying to have these Tickets Sorted?

  • When you are taking or preparing the Ticket for the Order?
  • After the Customer has Paid and the Transaction is complete?

If it is the First reason Having tickets in Order by Time seems logical to get the orders out to the first person that ordered, but I understand how this could cause problems on whos order if you do not assign a Customer.

If it is after the Transaction is complete, assigning the customer at Time of Payment, would help to see who is a regular and how much they spend in a timeframe and if you have a Loyalty program their rewards for buying from you.

I am just trying to understand how a computer would be assigning a name correctly to sort by name when none was given as you mentioned happens with Other POS systems.  The Lack of Customers names appearing when a Credit Card is Swiped was not as common even 6 years ago, but within the last year I have seen alot more Credit Cards that just show Chase, Discover, or Visa member or user instead of the persons actual name.
