Coupon codes

I am trying to create a coupon code for customers to get a percentage discount on any one item per order.  I have an online event coming up that I'd like to give customers a 15 percent discount on any one item in a purchase.  I am also trying to figure out how to make it not apply to things that already have a sale.  For example, I have 3 different items that already have a discount.  They are normally $10 each, but if a customer buys 3 or more, they are 8$ each.  I don't want the 15% to apply if someone is already using the previous discount.  I have looked at all of the help stuff I can find and cannot find an answer to this.

@Rianna At this time only one automatic discount will apply to each item.

The Square app will apply the discount most favorable to your customer. There isn't a way to change this setting automatically when orders are placed online.

@RobynR I believe, at least with my website. If the cart contains anything that is on sale it won't allow a promo code? Is this not correct?

can you create a code that the client puts in at check out then apply the discount. The code should work on any item in the client has the correct code. How do I create something like this.
