First of all you can open an online store for FREE. The free tier includes a domain like "yourstorename.square.site" If you want a custom domain you will have to pay for the basic plan or the first tier. You can edit and set up your whole site without it costing you anything. The processing rate for the online store is a little higher since it is considered a "card not present" transaction. The rate is 2.9% and .30c a transaction as opposed to 2.6% and .10c for in person card present transactions.
If you want to just connect a custom domain it is 6$, but if you want to have some of the best features for your site the 1st tier is $144 for a year and includes domain name registration (sure you can get a deal on a name, but that generally goes up after a year). Personally, I found it is not worth trying to save a few bucks on this. The time and energy you spend as a business owner to save $100 is not worth the time you sacrifice working on your business to grow it. You can do month to month and I think it is 16$ a month.
So try it out FOR FREE and then if you see the value, invest in the service. I process a lot of online orders every day for my restaurants and it is a huge labor saver.
