you can use the free square reader but you will be liable for any fraud due to the changes the credit card industry changed last year.  see this article.  https://squareup.com/emv-liability-shift

the chip reader is only $49 and is a good investment in security.  https://squareup.com/shop/hardware/us/en/products/chip-credit-card-reader-with-nfc

You may never have an issue but just one time and you will more than have paid for the chip reader.  I have 5 chip readers and they work great.
