[Update] Restaurant POS Redesign coming March 5

Hi sellers,

 

As we mentioned in January, we redesigned the Square Restaurants POS to make it easier to navigate and stay productive throughout service. This redesign includes highly requested features and a new look and feel that will appear on all of your devices starting March 5, 2024.

 

This update helps you:

  • Speed up order entry by adding images to menu items and group tiles.
  • Personalize hospitality by adding customer profiles to orders.
  • Keep service moving by accessing common actions from Checks, Floor Plans, or Cart.
  • Get to the features and reports you use the most quickly and easily with customized navigation.

 

If you tried these changes out via Release Manager, we hope you’re enjoying them! If you haven’t turned these updates on yet, they’ll start appearing across your devices starting March 5.

Was the "Track Remaining Items" option removed during the update?

Hi, the new version does not support some of the old item management functionality like the count on the tile (yet). For sellers that were using the previous functionality extensively, we're withholding the update until we are able to support most of the old functionality. I'll email you directly but it seems like your account is in that holdout group so you should not have lost any of the old functionality. 

I have lost all of that functionality. I've spent hours with customer service about this issue.

Is it possible to design floor plans with the dimensions of the Mobile POS floor plan applet? I'd love to have separate floor plans depending on which device you are using.

Does this update allow for open tabs through the Square Register?

Hi @Barkside - Thanks for reaching out on this. I'm assuming you are looking for pre-authorization for open tabs? This specific launch does not, however we have a separate beta program in flight where you can get access to test. I'll have our beta team reach out to you by email with more information. Thanks!

This update has been nothing but a headache for my business. We use square restaurants (free verion - plus is too expensive and not suitable to a counter service business).

The menu is hard to read and everything was rearranged. Item options are way too small and to correct anything you need to get on your computer and log into your dashboard. There is no way to turn this off or modify our layout unless you use your dashboard. Was really hoping this update would bring the app features onto our square register. 

My staff is lost and getting so confused by the orders screen having a tab for shipping. Notifications for new orders appear multiple times and are not getting organized correctly. Ever since the new update our System seems to also have issue with the customer facing screen not registering card or phone payments despite making payment sounds. I've contacted square several times to get this issue resolved to no avail. Gave up because I know restoring my device will not help correct the issue and they seem to never get back to me with a resolution. 

I wish unpaid checks/tickets would be in the same place as orders because having all your incoming orders in one place would make my business run so much smoother and help with keeping things in order. Having two spots for in person checks and another for online is just pointless and I wish this would have been included in this update. 

This update had removed two importation functionality from the previous. Please fix it asap. i am using Square for Restaurant - Plus account with IOS stands.

 

1) online incoming orders no longer turns orange on the "Orders Tab". we are finding orders with that are coming up and or had to rush to create them because we are not being notified (we are using the manual print functionality to keep track of what has been printed and what is not)

 

2) Modifiers on the item now shows the pre-selected and the manual selected. with two modifiers showing up on the ticket. the kitchen is getting very confused on what is the actually want or need from the customer. (yes, we need to keep the pre-selected so the customers ordering online knows that the item is made with spicy. they have options to change it to none or extra spicy. Online selections of these modifiers are working fine).

Why is the cash drawer not opening until the very end of the transaction all of a sudden? It is very frustrating and awkward for the customer and the cashier.

Hey @jennangel5, I appreciate you reaching out and bringing this to our attention. Let's try some of these troubleshooting steps to see if it is resolved. If you have a Square stand delete and reinstall the app. If you are using the Square Register reboot. If you can do a factory reset on the device. Also, make sure your app is up-to-date. If you continue to have issues please reach out to support, so we can look into this further. Thank you!

I have the Square Stand, so I deleted and reinstalled the app. I had to recreate my printer profile and settings because of that. The drawer still doesn't open until the very end of the transaction.

I appreciate you trying that @jennangel5. I would like to gather some more information so we can get a better idea of what is going on:

 

1. What app version is your pos on?

2. What cash drawer brand and model are using? 

3. Can you upload a video here of what you are experiencing?

Hi @jennangel5 👋 I'm trying to catch up on your thread here, but I'm a little confused on what the issue is. At what point during the transaction did the drawer open previously? Also, have you had a chance to reach out to the support team as @MayaP suggested? 

It used to open the moment you pressed what dollar amount they gave you.

I've noticed the same change at my business.  It seems like the drawer is unresponsive and then it opens at the very last moment.

According to our team, the software is working as intended here.

When a transaction is processed, we want to wait until it has been successfully recorded before opening the drawer to dispense change and printing a receipt. 

Otherwise, you could be giving out change for a transaction that, in the case of a connection issue, has not been properly recorded. 

It will take a couple of seconds for your iPad to connect to the server and record the payment, after which the drawer will open so you can give out the change and a receipt will print. 

 

The "order" for the drawer to open and receipt to print will be given once the screen indicating the amount of change appears.

That’s not the case at all. It was working just fine the way it was. In a lot of cases, the change screen is gone before the drawer opens so you may not give the right change if you’re super busy, or have to look back in transactions which takes so much longer.

I understand. That sounds like a frustrating experience. 

 

In your video, the correct behavior is shown: the amount received is entered, then the transaction takes a couple of seconds to process, and finally the change is shown on the screen at the same time as the cash drawer opens and the receipt prints. 

 

If your experience is different and the drawer is not opening once the transaction has finished processing and the change amount is shown, you'll want to reach out to our direct support team so this can be investigated as a bug.

Is no one going to acknowledge that this is a CHANGE in what was happening? In every one of the responses from Square members, you all are talking to me like I'm new here. It's coming off as condescending to be honest. I'm telling you that a change has occurred and it is, in my view, negative, and you all are telling me this is how it is suppose to work as if that is always how it was. So, if this is a change that was made on purpose, just say that. For the record, I don't like the change. Whenever I have a mile long line at a food truck event, this just delays us that much longer. In a single transaction, it doesn't seem like that much time, but I service 100 tickets an hour in some cases and that is going to add up. 

You are 100% right that it is different, and it is much slower, and since we are talking about a cash transaction I'm not sure why it takes any time to process or verify the transaction.

Hi everyone - Hadley from the F&B Product Team here! 👋 Thank you so much for your questions and feedback. I wanted to provide an update on showing notifications for Online Orders in the bottom navigation.

 

We've heard the feedback loud and clear and have added this back as of app version 6.40 which is now fully available on all RST POS hardware. You'll see notifications with order counts for any online orders if you have this set up on your POS. 

 

Additionally we're working to address concerns around adding item counts to tiles on POS and should have an update to share there soon. 

 

As always please continue to share any feedback, thoughts, or questions. 

The update appeared during service yesterday and has a ton of issues.  

 

The lack of detailed documentation and how to customize is frustrating.

Can you please fix the drawer opening delay? It is already causing problems and we have not gotten to our busy season yet. 

Why was the "track remaining items" option removed during the update? I've spent hours with customer service, and no one will acknowledge this HUGE change. Where is functionality with count on tile?

 

So ridiculous to introduce an update with ZERO information about how to customize. Really, really poorly done.

@analogcoffee I checked the app for updates how I normally would, and it just said "open" where it would normally say "update", but I touched it to open the details of the app listing and it said "update" in there! I did the update and it is working now!! Pops right open when you press the dollar amount!!

any updates on when the loyalty sign-in and redemption option screen will be available in the beta program for restaurants? Finding that i am losing in person ordering for my loyalty subscribers, and its causing us to lose revenue. Love the new features with the beta redesign but am not thrilled that its been over 4 months and still no answer as to when loyalty subscription will be available. Seeing that this program has been such a huge success for my restaurant, I am not sure how much longer I can wait for square to make it a priority to add back in. Afterall its a paid service and should be made priority.
