Hi Everyone! I've been reading a great deal to educate myself more and more on analytics however I can't get over the amount of .ru spam sites that are hitting my site. Is there anything weebly can do to help block these? Is there an app that we as users can plug-in and help us block this stuff. I have more porn sites and these spam bots hitting my site this month than I've had in a long time. Its just frustrating when you're trying to boost your business. I'm sure I'm preaching to a choir.... but It really ruins your analytics when you're trying to target your audience and figure out how to improve bounce rates and increase traffic. just stinks. lol
Thanks for the help or suggestions in advance!

Hey there @moki75!
Pretty much every site on the internet will have hits like those, and while annoying they don't actually hurt anything. They're also only visible for you as the site owner when checking your stats, so you can safely ignore them.
Thanks for posting!

A couple of years ago one of my Weebly sites was used by a group of .RU folks as a practice place to learn how to blow up and disable websites. I could tell by watching the stats that every week on a certain day there were 80+ additional people on my site, then additional destruction happened on that day too. This went on for about 5 weeks, then on the 5th week the site was totally destroyed, and I had to start over and rebuild it. When I contacted Weebly I was told the same line "there is nothing Weebly can do and the threat is equal across the internet."
Having used cPanel websites in the past I knew that if I had cPanel I could block all ,RU access to my site through the cPanel, or anyone else I choose to block. So I moved my site to BlueHost but still used Weebly, using BlueHost's cPanel control over my account/server.
I have recently moved my websites back to Weebly because BlueHost doesn't have the ability to offer responsive websites through their sponsorship of Weebly. I am quite disappointed to have to make this choice to allow my websites to be vulnerable again in order to offer responsive sites. I feel like I am stuck in a very uncomfortable place.
Weebly, you guys know that there are nasty folks out there who enjoy disabling websites, and by saying that it is equal across the internet is not true, there are systems available that can block and protect sites from being available by the folks who intend damage. I love your product but my next move may have to be away from Weebly and back to a cPanel site so that I can control the access to the asset that is my website.
Why can't you protect the servers that manage all of our websites and help us protect our assets? If cPanel can do it you should be able to also.

@AcademyofSpirit, our servers are protected. We guarantee higher than 99.9% uptime for our servers, and your site is stored both on servers in San Francisco and in Las Vegas to ensure everything will continue running smoothly in case of a catastrophe. Our operations team monitors this server activity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Your account and your site is secure as long as you don't share your email address login or your password, or have anyone authorized as a site admin/editor that you don't trust.
On our end, Weebly has the server and your site protected!

However would it not be possible for Weebly to add an IP blocking service.
I have used Cloudflare in the past and that allows the blocking of whole countries at a click. Surely this would not only save a heap of data transfer demands on Weebly servers, it would also allow only those markets Weebly site owners want to reach to be reached...

I'm chiming in on this discussion, after having talked to Brodie a week or so ago about this same issue. I was told the same thing as in his comment here, nearly word for word. I've actually removed my Contact page on my site, out of security concerns. Another concern is that when I'm looking at my stats/referring sites, amongst all the .ru and other ridiculous, spammy sounding "websites" is my own website. Right now, "elksongjewelry.com" is in the list of referring sites, showing 10 views, but if I click on it, it takes me to the same "Your connection is not private, attackers might be trying to steal your information from elksongjewelry.com (for example passwords, messages or credit cards). NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID....how can I not be concerned about this? Especially after having just paid in advance for 6 months of site hosting? As was suggested, aren't there some sort of IP blocking apps that Weebly could make available to their customers for this?

I'm chimming in again...
I have sites like burger-imperia and pizza tycoon which are spam bot sites. They do a great deal of damage to your analytics! There has got to be a one-click solution to be able to click and block these sites. It makes it hard for me to want to spend the money to upgrade to the business plan again if things like this aren't really resolved. Not to mention, making tracking your business traffic even tougher! This type of one click solution is a Value Added feature that most if not all the business sites would appreciate. Might be something that the developers need to look at quickly.

Hello, everyone!
We all agree that referral spam is annoying. However, it in no way does any damage to your site. It is not possible. The only reason these bots exist is not just to annoy you. It is the chance that a vast majority of curious webmasters, will see the referring links and click on them. Bingo! That is precisely what the spammers wanted you to do.
Moreover, if they are nasty spammers and you click on one of their referral links. You could end up with malware or a virus on your computer or device.
We always recommend never to click on any of these referral links, unless you know the site and know the place well. Most commonly, the referral sites host advertisements. The site's owner is ordinarily paid by the advertisers for every unique visitor or by page load the ad receives. And even more, if the visitor clicks the ad and makes a purchase. The idea is that the more referral links they can send out. The more visitors they will receive and as a result they fill up their bank accounts with ease.
If you sign up for Google Analytics, for your Weebly website stats, you can block these bots. The following tutorial will guide you on how to setup Analytics with your Weebly site.
https://hc.weebly.com/hc/en-us/articles/201979698-Google-Analytics
Then use this tutorial to learn how to add the spamming referrals to the referral exclusion list.
https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2795830?hl=en
For more in-depth information search Google for the following exact phrase (without quotes) guide to removing all google analytics spam
There are a number of guides that list the top spamming bots of the week that you can add to your exclusion list.
As stated earlier, please DO NOT click on any referral link unless you know the site well. You can open yourself up to many misfortunes if you choose to do so.
*Remember, these are spammers and do not deserve your visit*.

I'd like more information on this and also a way to remove them from my referring list in Weebly. I think I want to permanently block them if that is possible. I did go to Google analytics and followed your instructions on adding them to the referral exclusions but, truthfully, typing in all those sites is a real pain because my typing skills are not always that accurate and I'm afraid to copy and paste the site in case it mistakenly opens.
Thanks.

khof123, Robin's post is the only info we have for you on this. We don't have a way to remove those referring sites from Weebly stats, and I would advise you just to proceed carefully when configuring your Google Analytics.

Dear Weebly,
Spam bot traffic is an issue and has the potential to do more than just skew our data. Heavy spam bot traffic has the potential to overload servers, contributes to slower load times, higher bounce rates, and lower website rankings. This traffic can be blocked from the server in a few ways ... one is via dynamic IP restrictions and another would even be via the .htaccess file.
Personally, I am tired of this type of traffic and it is bad news for anyone trying to run a business using weebly. Here is a step-by-step tutorial from Microsoft that outlines one way of fixing the situation depending on your particular setup. https://www.iis.net/learn/manage/configuring-security/using-dynamic-ip-restrictions
Thank you

As a veteran online marketer I say this is not a big issue. It is an annoyance. I went to google to see what pizza tycoon was and found this article.
Although I already knew what the deal was. I have a new site with Weebly which I love. And I was just excited to see some visit so early on. Annddd this is par for the course as they say.
I have a Google Analytics account for my website. You see the same thing with GA. So everybody collecting information on your website will have the same issue.
I would rather Weebly concentrate on continuing to give us a great service.
