Since I see this is your first post let me welcome you to the Square community.
So you set your items up on your dashboard, Good first step.
You need to figure out which App you will like to use, Square Pos, Square for Retail or Square for Restaurants.
Basically when you sign in with your Square User Id and Password to the app you decide this will then get all your items from your Square Dashboard. I would recommend setting up a device codes 5586-manage-devices-with codes so that your register does not log in using the Owners Id and Password. Once you enter your user id and password the register by internet connection will automatically update your item library from your Dashboard.
Here is a video walk through on how to setup your Register: Video How to setup and connect your Register
The 2:00 mark starts for signing in I recommend watching the full video to get an idea of everything.

Thank you for your help with this. The suggestion to use the register code was a good one. I figured out that my problem was that my register said it was connected to the network, but it wasn't. After all day on support with square and my internet provider, I finally bothered my tech friend with 25 years of tech support experience. My problem ended up being a bad port for my ethernet. I moved it to a new one, and problem solved.
