Payroll taxes for seasonal employees

Hi! I just hired my first summer employees, and it is my understanding that square payroll automatically withholds and submits payroll taxes to the appropriate groups. My question is: the next payroll tax payment is in the fall when my employees have already finished up their summer work. Do I need to keep paying for square payroll throughout the fall so that my taxes will get submitted?

thanks for any help in advance

HI @Cocoatree.  I, too, am a seasonal employer.  To answer your question, once your last payroll of the season has processed, you can manage your subscriptions and “Pause” your payroll account.  This will stop the monthly charges until you restart it or until you run your first payroll of the new season.  Any taxes that are pending will still be processed and filed/remitted on your normal deposit schedules.  Also, at the end of the year, any W2s and/or 1099s will be filed and sent to employees and contractors.

One thing I will caution you on.  If you are doing pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation through Square/AP Intego (or anyone else), you will need to call them directly and pause your workers’ comp deductions.  If you don’t most of the insurance providers will start charging you an inactivity fee on a monthly or quarterly basis.  I always email them after my last payroll has processed and let them know that my season is over.  They take care of the rest.

Let me know if you need anything else, and have a great season!
