Why is the item detail screen skipping despite having "Skip Item Details Screen" turned off?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Question about Item Details Screen.

Hello, I am a manager of a small coffee shop, and we have used Square the entire time the business has been open. Up until recently, if we selected an item on our POS, it would bring up the Item Details screen for us to select modifiers and such. A couple of months back, there was an update and now everything automatically goes into the cart when we select it, forcing us to have to tap the item in the cart to give it modifiers (this is especially frustrating when we have someone order two of the same item, but want different modifiers because it will add the item x2 to the cart and we can't edit one at a time without taking one of those items out of the cart if that makes sense). I've checked that the "Skip Item Details Screen" option is unchecked on everything, but it still skips this anyway.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? It has really slowed us down with taking orders, and I want to try to make things as easy as I can on my staff.

Thanks for your question, @CrossingCoffee! 👋

Customizing your modifiers may improve your checkout experience. Customizing your modifiers ensures that a certain number of modifiers are required each time an item is added to your cart.

To customize modifiers from your online Square Dashboard:

  1. Navigate to Items & Orders > Items > Item Library.
  2. Select an item to view its details.
  3. Locate your modifier set and click Customize.
  4. Choose how many modifiers can be selected for an order by clicking the arrows next to Required Modifiers and Maximum Modifiers.
  5. Click Save.

I hope that this helps, but if you have any other questions please let me know!

@CrossingCoffee That is strange behavior.  The  "Skip Item Details Screen" used to be "automatically add item to cart" and it is indeed annoying.  I would try creating a new item on your dashboard and then going into the point of sale and seeing if there is any change.

The next thing I would do is make sure your iOS and square app version are both up to date.  This can lead to weird behavior.  Same with android etc.

We have the Square Register, and when I looked it is fully updated. I've even looked at all the settings on the Register itself, but I'm not finding anything. The Item Details screen used to have a full screen Pop up automatically which was very helpful because 99% of our orders have some sort of customization, and now we are trying to set up one of those printers that prints a sticker for each item, so being able to customize them easier would make the change a lot smoother. Hopefully someone can help me figure out what setting to fix!

This was a huge help!!

Is there a way for it to make that part full screen rather than just the side of the screen? If not, I will happily take this!
