Uncategorized Item Sales

Anyone know if the uncategorized item issue from 2022 was ever updated? i.e. in a rush we created an item and sold a bunch of it without having it under one of our categories for reporting purposes. If the category is updated, will the report update?

From the time you create the category, going foward. The category for the sale of the Item will update.  But previous sales will not update since that transaction is already recorded and can not be changed.  This is how my understanding of this goes.  Just like if I had a sale and had the category of 16 oz size, and changed it form 16 oz to 22 oz, for the categories.  Previous sales would still show as 16 oz not 22 oz for example.

 

You should still be able to see the Item sold but some may be in Uncategorized and others my show in your new category for the Year of the change.

 

When I first started, I would ring up the sale on a cash register.  If the customer wanted to use a credit card, we typed in the amount due through Square.  These all came through Square as Uncategorized sales.  To this day all those sales still show that way on reports.  Same as when my online store used Square to sell items and used Square to process the transaction.

Thank you. I wish we could have a one day period to fix the categories - our report are going to be messed up.

Easiest way I know to do it is create your Categories in Square Dashboard - Items - Catalog.   Write these down exactly as you enter them.   Then download your Catalog as a csv file.  Then for the Items of X Category.... Put X under category buy pasting it into each row of the Category Column.   When Done save this file.   Then repeat for each other Category you have.   This may seem time comsuming but it is faster than trying to do it in the app or on the Square dashbord one item at a time.

 

Wish there was a way I knew to put all like items together to besides categories, to make this faster for you.  Maybe if all the items of the same category had the same price, you could sort the csv file by Price.   Just be careful if you have odd items with similar prices.    Example my 16oz candles ar1 $14.99 and so are my Lotions.  So when I sort my csv file by price the lotions are mixed with 16oz candles if I sort by the Price field.
