Sub Categories

Sub Categories

I know this has been mentioned in the past.  I know you can use variations and modifiers and that you can have site subcategories online.  But I am a Pizza/Deli along with a Retail store.

I know you are looking for reasons why subcategories would be helpful so here I go.  For instance in my store I track cost in QuickBooks under major categories such as Grocery, Meat Dept, Lotto, Pizza/Deli etc. I use these as my major Roll up categories- See example of Grocery

Grocery-

   Produce

        Weighed

            items

        Non Weighed

             items

   Candy

       Candy Bars

            items

        Novelty

            items

        Truffles

             items

   Local Items

       Maple Syrup

           items

       Private label Spices

          items

   Pet products

      Food/Treats

         items

      Toys

         items

    Dairy

      Cheese

          items

      Milk

        items

You get the idea, when I break them down into individual categories then I have to export to Excell, rearrange my rows and add roll them up manually.

We are also Using Square for Restaurants to integrate our online Menu.  But I have to have all the menu categories in seperatly so they show on the Menu correctly and I can have correct tickets print to the kitchen but when it comes to reporting it would be nice to be able to roll up all the menu categories so I can see what the Restaurant did.  I know that is possible with Restaurants Plus but since we have both we need the retail tracking of Retail Plus.  So far I have been able to get everything to work together; with some workarounds, we have only had it a week.  But I do see reporting as an issue moving forward.

Thanks

Re: can you make subcategories

If you have at least one other category, you can create a subcategory within your Square Online website.

Head to your Square Online overview page > Items > Site Categories > click the + button next to a category.

After saving your changes, the new category will appear nested underneath the category you just selected on the Items > Site Categories page. Learn more about categories here.

I hope this helps, @hishersbling - and welcome to the Seller Community!

Re: can you make subcategories

Hi @coppermug84 👋 Thanks for reaching out! Happy to have you join us here on the Seller Community. Welcome!

We do not have any current plans to implement a sub-category system. We feel that the implementation of Variations and Modifiers offers these same features of potential sub-categories, and allow for trackable iterations of existing items.

We would love to hear more about what you would use sub-categories for! How specifically would sub-categories be beneficial to your business? - what kind of items do you sell?

I will keep an eye out for your response!

Hi @WyoSkate,

We appreciate the insight!

Our teams are constantly looking through our seller's feedback to make necessary improvements, and we will be sure to let you know if anything ever changes or if new updates are released.

Hi, I'm looking to now expand my square use for an online shop, and Subcategories would be CRUCIAL.  I see this topic is now 2 years old, and it doesn't look like Square has done anything to improve the situation.  I'm posting to reiterate, that for MANY people using Square, the ability to create subcategories is crucial for a functional inventory AND store.  Please. PLEASE consider modifying this.  I'm hesitant to start an online inventory, when it's going to be so awkward with current category restrictions.  Do I categorize my jewelry by Theme, or by type of piece (i.e. necklace, earrings).  What I NEED is the ability to create Categories which are Themes, and then be able to have subcategories under each.  I also am expanding my business to non-jewelry pieces, again, which will require their own categories and subcategories.

Frustrating to say the least, I have just signed up to Square and need sub categories, I am connecting it with my Weebly website and that has sub categories, I might not be able to use square, perhaps a refund and a rethink? so annoying.

Yes extremely frustrating and obviously a multitude of people have requested this.  Square team is unresponsive.  While I think the product is great in general, this is a BIG miss.  I am a retired software engineer and know what it takes to add this feature. As a user, I know how necessary it is. Really irritating.

Exactly.  Necessary, and not that difficult for them to add.  And no responses at all to this issue despite it cropping up for a couple years and CLEARLY being so necessary to some vendors.

This is a basic feature and means of inventory management, I am baffled why you do not offer this.  Is there serious consideration to implementing this and if so what is the expected timeline?
I know we are not a big company, but if you will/can not provide this basic inventory management function then for anything long term this will be a deal-breaker. Your service will only be temporary because we have an immediate need.

Exactly!

Apparently the requests in this Community Forum fall on deaf ears or this is not the channel that Square uses for basic feature requests.

How/Where should we go to request features?

Well here's what I did, I engaged with a designer on 99d to design my new website, they started work on it using Square, it was quickly apparent that my store would look a mess without sub categories, just a long list, so I had to cancel my order with the freelancer which I wasn't happy about, it wasn't her fault, I did some digging around and found that Weebly has sub categories, so reverted to Weebly using Square as the payment portal ( I'm not tech savvy)

Weebly is owned by Square 🤷🏽‍♂️

Now I have sub categories.

"Our teams are constantly looking through our seller's feedback". That is a false narrative.   There has been a so many requests for this functionality going waaaaay back. Don't attempt to pacify us. What will it take to get this added???
