Sub Categories

Sub Categories

I know this has been mentioned in the past.  I know you can use variations and modifiers and that you can have site subcategories online.  But I am a Pizza/Deli along with a Retail store.

I know you are looking for reasons why subcategories would be helpful so here I go.  For instance in my store I track cost in QuickBooks under major categories such as Grocery, Meat Dept, Lotto, Pizza/Deli etc. I use these as my major Roll up categories- See example of Grocery

Grocery-

   Produce

        Weighed

            items

        Non Weighed

             items

   Candy

       Candy Bars

            items

        Novelty

            items

        Truffles

             items

   Local Items

       Maple Syrup

           items

       Private label Spices

          items

   Pet products

      Food/Treats

         items

      Toys

         items

    Dairy

      Cheese

          items

      Milk

        items

You get the idea, when I break them down into individual categories then I have to export to Excell, rearrange my rows and add roll them up manually.

We are also Using Square for Restaurants to integrate our online Menu.  But I have to have all the menu categories in seperatly so they show on the Menu correctly and I can have correct tickets print to the kitchen but when it comes to reporting it would be nice to be able to roll up all the menu categories so I can see what the Restaurant did.  I know that is possible with Restaurants Plus but since we have both we need the retail tracking of Retail Plus.  So far I have been able to get everything to work together; with some workarounds, we have only had it a week.  But I do see reporting as an issue moving forward.

Thanks

Re: can you make subcategories

If you have at least one other category, you can create a subcategory within your Square Online website.

Head to your Square Online overview page > Items > Site Categories > click the + button next to a category.

After saving your changes, the new category will appear nested underneath the category you just selected on the Items > Site Categories page. Learn more about categories here.

I hope this helps, @hishersbling - and welcome to the Seller Community!

Re: can you make subcategories

Hi @coppermug84 👋 Thanks for reaching out! Happy to have you join us here on the Seller Community. Welcome!

We do not have any current plans to implement a sub-category system. We feel that the implementation of Variations and Modifiers offers these same features of potential sub-categories, and allow for trackable iterations of existing items.

We would love to hear more about what you would use sub-categories for! How specifically would sub-categories be beneficial to your business? - what kind of items do you sell?

I will keep an eye out for your response!

If I'm understanding you correctly, you'd want to go into Categories (in your SquareUp Dashboard)...

  • Square Up Dashboard (the web address will start with https://squareup.com/dashboard/items/library/) > Click 'Items' Icon > then click 'Categories' > Create a Category (i.e. Supplier A) > Click 'Save' (don't assign any items to that category yet).

Then click the 3 dashes in the upper left corner of your screen and either click the 'Online' Icon or scroll down and click on the text link 'Online' and it will take you to your Square - Online Dashboard and that's where you'll create the sub-categories.

  • Square - Online Store Dashboard (the web address will start with https://square.online/app/store/users/) > Click the 'Items' dropdown > Click 'Categories' >  'Add Category' > Enter the 'Category Title' which in your case would be 'Product 1' as an example > then scroll down under 'Category Organization' and click the + sign for 'Supplier A' > Click 'Save'.

Now, Product 1 will show as a sub-category to Supplier A. To get items to show under the sub-category, you'll want to go your Square - Online Dashboard page, click on the item you want to assign to the 'Product 1' sub-category.

  • Once you have the item open, scroll down to 'Categories' > click 'Choose Categories' > Find the supplier you want and check the box for the specific sub-category you want > Click 'Save'.

Hope this helps!!!!!!

forms .

Thanks for your help. I know there is a way I must not be doing something correctly, or I'm not set up correctly.

I would do the create the website option, then. It sounds like you haven't created one yet?

Ok thanks I’ll do that

@AdamB @Joe it is becoming more frustrating that standard features in square pos , retail and online do not match.

For those of us with online and physical stores it is logical that we want standardisation across the platforms!

E.g catagories and sub catagories

Having to create them twice is time consuming and sub catagories on line but not in store.

I sell garden machinery so sub catagories are key to grouping similar but separate products.

Eg Main catagory petrol lawnmowers

Sub catagories:

4 wheeled

Rear roller

Electric start

I could even go a step further and have a main catagory of lawnmower with petrol mowers as a sub catagory giving 3 levels

This speeds up customer and employee searches.

Modifiers and options do not help with this.

It may also be appropriate to include a product in more than one catagory eg petrol 4 wheel and petrol electric start.

I would suggest this is a necessary and logical feature for many users and should be n urgent feature request.

Thank you

I also need this feature as we sell used electronics. We sell PCs and I have to create a million different categories for different models of the same item when it should be a category by manufacturer and subcategory by model. Currently searching for an item is a PITA and tracking sales more so.

Hi There,

I am thinking of using Square as my website, but I need to be able to create sub-categories for colors.   I have my store front on Go Daddy, which I import from Square.  However, Square and GoDaddy haven't been syncing properly lately.  I had to delete all my items on Go Daddy and re-import.  Now I am at the stage of trying to get everything into the corresponding subcategory again.

https://hishersbling.com/shop is my site.  If you go to my site you will see what I am working on.  I would rather just use Square, but I have over 4000 items, which need to be separated by sub-categories.  Is this something I can do with Square if I pay for my site with you?

Any questions, just ask.

Sincerely,

Barb

Everyone here is saying that it can be done on Square Online. However, my business in in-person only as we are primarily a service provider. I would like to organize my services offered into categories and sub-categories to make it easier to quickly invoice a client on site. This seems like a basic feature that Square should have.
