Weebly Promote Email Links Flagged as Threat/Won't Open

Hi there,

I'm having an issue where the links I include in my Weebly Promote emails won't open. I discovered this since I include my personal email as one of the recipients so I can see what my completed email looks like and how it acts when received by one of my subscribers.

When I click on one of my links, my browser warns that it is a 'potential threat' and refuses to open the link. Is there anything I can do to avoid this happening? All of the links I add to my emails are either for my own website or are my own content on external website, all of which are legitimate and reputable.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for explaining all of this, really--I very much appreciate it! I will see what I might be able to do on my end but am very hopeful regarding what the admins might be able to do if that is at all possible. In the meantime I'll communicate with my subscribers regarding the issue. I use Weebly Promote to send a monthly newsletter and not for typical marketing, so my subscriber base is much more a reader-base, which is why I'm always concerned about links and the ability for them to click through properly.

Hey there, @C_95.  Can you please provide the specific link/URL that is throwing the potential threat warning in your email client?  I understand that you feel like “All of the links I add to my emails are either for my own website or are my own content on external website, all of which are legitimate and reputable,” but it is still entirely possible that the particular link in question might have a flag on it for some currently unknown reason.  Thanks!

Hi there, and can do. Here's an example link copied directly from the email: http://click.promote.weebly.com/ls/click?upn=u001.zN0amnEiaT974c3afmR6AxtSGvn9aquxZSs-2BW3xyFJUvX4Ey...

When I click on this, it redirects to a 'safebrowse.io' link warning of the threat and thus redirecting me.

So….. when I click on that link my browser does NOT redirect to anything.  It goes directly to the product page.  That tells me that all of your customers probably are not having the same experience as you.  My browsers are Safari and Chrome. My email addresses are hosted by Apple (personal) and Microsoft (business).

Safebrowse.io seems to have an issue with this kind of link.  Probably because of parental controls, or school-based controls, that try to weed out click-bait and suck.  You can remove it from your devices/accounts sometimes.  You can also Disable it with a PIN that you used to set up parental controls, if you have that access.

Anyway, try Googling “what is safebrowse.io“ and you’ll get all kinds of information.  However, removing click.promote.weebly.com from the “suspicious” list is probably something you’d have to initiate with their support staff directly.  Most likely, someone reported such a link as a scam/phishing attempt and that blacklisted everyone who uses it.  Virus checkers like that always go overboard.

That's reassuring to know it was not being flagged on your end, nor likely for any of my readers who use those browsers. I'm on Firefox but I actually think the issue is with my internet provider, Xfinity since it seems to have their branding on the safebrowse.io. I've also noticed a couple of subscribers with @comcast.com email addresses are showing up as 'Undelivered', so I'm assuming this may entirely be an issue associated with the security protocols Xfinity/Comcast has on their end. I'm not sure if you have any pull with Weebly, but I wonder if it would be possible to petition Comcast to remove the promote.weebly address from their list of possible phishing/spam since I imagein this is an issue with other Weebly Promote customers

Happy to give you a little reassurance.  This is a complicated issue of the internet since there are so many ways that bad actors can prey on unsuspecting folks — customers AND sellers.  Sometimes, the good gets swept up with the bad as tech companies try to stay ahead of fraud, which will always be a never-ending battle.

I’m not sure that Square/Weebly can do much about this.  But you should be able to make some screen shots, etc, and submit a request to your internet provider letting them know that they “painted” with too big a brush here.  It looks like they blacklisted “click.promote.weebly.com” which had the effect of blacklisting everyone who uses “click.promote.weebly.com.”  Since this was probably an issue with a bad-faith Square seller rather than an issue with Square/Weebly as a whole, you might be successful in getting that removed from their blacklist.  It’s worth a try.

Having said that, I can tag a few Square moderators here so they can check with the Ecom team.  But, don’t hold your breath here.  As with everything related to internet security, it’s never as simple or straightforward as we merely mortals think it should be.

@_Violet @Katie_SQ here’s a summary.  @C_95 is seeing that our links that use “click.promote.weebly.com” links are causing safebrowse.io to display warnings that the link is not safe.  They are wondering if Square/Weebly might be able to petition Xfinity (or whoever) to remove “click.promote.weebly.com” from their blacklist.  It’s a fair question since the company should have more clout that we individual sellers have.  Thanks for any insights.
