Can an item discount be shown on receipt under the item discounted, not at bottom?

If you are discounting select items as it stands now the discount appears on the receipt collectively together at the bottom. So the consumer can't see the select item discounts under that item.   This can be confusing to the consumer/customer.  It would be nice for the customer to see the discount under that item on receipt.     If this is a current option, please advise how to change receipt options.   Thank you! Could this be a possible option? @Woo_Phil

This isn't an option, unfortunately.  I agree that it is confusing and really should be broken out per item as I have never been to a store where every item that I buy is printed at full price and they just lump the amount off into 1 total at the bottom.  I'm not sure why it is the way it is and hopefully, it will change, but it has been that way for the last 6 years.

Thank you for the response.  Maybe if we all express our need for this feature, they may listen.  Seems like it would be easy to adjust.

Unfortunately, a lot of things seem like they would be easy to adjust and they still aren't done or even being considered.  This has been requested many times over the years.  But is a new year so maybe this year 🙂

@nansboutique it sounds like you are talking about on the receipts that are generated by Square?

If so I wouldn't be the person to ask about that 😛

I don't work for Square. I work for WooCommerce.

We have a plugin for WooCommerce that allows you to accept payments using your Square account, so I sometimes visit these forums to answer questions about that plugin.

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: viewing discounts on receipt

I use discounts in my Square Register, and sometimes apply multiple discounts according to sale items. When I print receipts, the discounts are lumped at the bottom as totals. This is confusing to some of my customers, and I would like each discount to shop up under the corresponding items that have been discounted. Is there a way to setup the receipts to print out like this? I dislike having customers think I'm trying to be deceptive by not identifying discounts as clearly as possible.

@HC_Charlie - Yikes, we certainly don't want your customers to feel like they're being gypped out of a discount.  😖

While there isn't a way to list discounts under each corresponding item, I can see how this would prevent any confusion for your customers.

Thanks for pointing out where we need to improve as it relates to how discounts are posted to receipts. I'll make sure the Product Team gets eyes on this. Feel free to check back here periodically if anything changes!

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I couldn't find the earlier question thread regarding this, or I would have posted directly there. Please try to have someone address this issue: this really has started to become an issue as I am doing more sales and discounts. This could be a deal breaker with using Square going forward and as my store begins to grow.

+1 for this option.  In what world would a customer NOT want to see the discount per item?

Any updates on this issue? It's big sale time in retail with Black Friday and the Holidays. I just setup some discounts in my Square register with 30% off items...and my first customer left and came back 10 minutes later confused with her receipt. Although the discounts are calculated and deducted correctly, it's constant confusion with my customers (as well as myself sometimes!) as to what items are discounted, since they are lumped together at the bottom and not reflected per items. Hope Square can advise on this soon.

(note: some discounts I use per Category, while others I apply per item, but they still list out together at the bottom)

I was finally told the truth after pressing square many months. 1) there is no timetable to make this change

2) how square was oringinally coded its probably not possible to make receipts print discounts itemized.

So this will probably never get fixed. Its a major retail flaw that apparently square doesnt understand.. doesnt care.. or they know its not possible so they just give you the same response as they have for 4+ years now.

This single issue is driving me away from square and im looking for another provider to offer the same services as square does. A temp work around is to only provide electronic receipts. They display correctly. However square cannot print as the electronic receipts show. Sorry to provide bad news. Good luck as you will have 100s of people saying all sorts of nasty things about your business due to this issue. Its been a nightmare for me!

Interesting. I was told this launched on square stand in the last few weeks and was coming to square register by the end of the year. We haven’t started using Square yet for this exact reason and don’t have a stand to test this with.

Thanks for this information. I wasn't aware that it displays correctly on digital receipts. That's a great thing since a lot of my customers get digital receipts, although I'm not able to see them myself (since they go to the customer's email address). The best work around I can figure right now is to change each items description/price to list the discount, and then change it back. A bit more work but at least it would be more clear to the customers looking at a receipt. For example if an item is a $10 book, I can change the description to $10 book, 50% off. And it would show the price as $5 on the receipt. Just remember to change it back when the item is no longer on sale.

I think this may have been resolved! I printed out a customer's receipt yesterday, and it appears to show the discount after EACH ITEM instead of listing at the bottom. This is a wonderful improvement for serving my customers, thank you!

It looks like we are halfway there.  The printed receipts do indeed show the individual discounts and the actual amount paid for the item, which is great!  However, the customer facing screen does not.  So, the customer can't see the amount they are paying until they get the receipt.  The customer facing screen show the original price, with a percent discount below each item, but it does not show how much is taken off in dollars or what the final price is.

Yes, I also did notice that; the customer-facing screen still lists discounts at the bottom. I had a confused customer this week, but I was able to scroll down the screen for them, and show them the discount and that helped. Many customers choose to not receive any receipt, so if they decline a receipt I'll at least print one to show them the discount again.

I know this has been frustrating to our customers, but the improvements so far on this issue have been really great. I'm sure we'll continue to get positive changes coming from the teams at Square.
