Multiple Sellers

Doing art show with 3 other artists.  Thinking of using one square account for inventory and payment.  Will this screw up taxes/1099? What are other options?

Hello @RichSchleicherA thanks for your post. I don't know what the current income/sales limit is, but there would be a certain dollar amount that would trigger a 1099. If that would be the case, and your show sells greater than that amount, I'd worry that this could mess up taxes; the person who "owns" the Square account would get a 1099 and have to claim that income. If your sales are less than the cutoff, then you won't have the 1099 worry, but you'd still have a mess to sort through and divide up sales and also state sales tax.

If there is a reason why you need to use just one piece of Square hardware, you can set up "categories" for each of the artists participating. Then you can sort sales by Categories. But I'd recommend each of the artist getting their own Square account to keep everything separate.

@RichSchleicherA ;

Plus on top of what @HC_Charlie said, :

1) setting up a Square account is Free

2) each artist can be a checkout counter for their items

3) you each would get a Free Magnetic reader (choose your platform android or apple) as long as your device has an headset port.

4) Tap to pay on a cell phone can now be setup so no other hardware is needed unless you want it or need to Dip a chip.

        tap-to-pay-on-Iphone

        tap-to-pay-android

        For cards with a Chip and no tap you can use the Bluetooth reader - chip-credit-card-reader-with-nfc

5) you can all have your separate inventories for your items

Now if you want to cross sell you would need to put the other sellers items and prices in your Items catalog.  Maybe as a Category of Seller Name or Vendors Name so that you can talk to accountant and show what $$ went to other vendors.  You may need to give them your own 1099's again depending on these tax thresh holds if you sell their items or they sell yours.

I think it is better to each setup your own Square Accounts since it does not really cost much more if it is 1 account or multiple accounts to setup.  But could be a costly problem when Tax time appears.  Just my 2 cents.
