Categorizing transactions after the sale.

Can anyone explain to me why, as a business owner that I can't categorize my transactions after the sale is made?  This is to the point that I am about to move away from Square.

@Jbh1 Are you talking about dining options or are you talking about item categories?

One reason you can't change those after the sale is for accounting purposes, any edits after a sale need to be able to be tracked or you could have someone take advantage of a system for fraud.  Now if you are the only person doing business here, then it makes sense this isn't a concern for you, but sellers with employees it could be.

The other reason would have to do with loading up past transactions and applying the new tags to all of those transactions and then saving them.  While this could be done, the processing overhead and the problems it could cause with editing other parts of a transactions (see reason 1), could be prohibitive.

I guess the question I would ask is what prevents you from have categories set up in the beginning? or what exact data are you trying to track?

All I want to be able to do is take a transaction that was either put in a wrong category or not put in a category at all at the time of original transaction and put it in the proper category.   Because i can't do this simple function it makes square virtually useless for tracking inventory.  I am not wanting to delete a transaction or change an amount.  I get the fraud aspect I guess but shouldn't those setting be controlled by the customer, not Square?  I don't need squares' assistance with fraud at my business, i need their software to help me properly track my sales. I pay them a great deal

@Jbh1 You make a couple of good points, especially on the accountability at the personal level.  When you say a transaction, are you meaning specific items?  or the entire sale?  I am wondering if there is another way to get what you want but I need a little more info or example on the flow/type of items you are trying to categorize and how you want your sales reporting to look.
