Hello, I'm new

Well, I'm not new, infact I'm quite worn.

I'm Dave, I have recently started using Square for my new chilli sauce venture and so far, have had no issues.

I'm a full time locksmith, and no, we're not all crooks!

I'm a creative by nature, so like to try new things, including growing the chilli pods, which, where possible, go into my sauces.

Always open to advice if you're offering it.

Thank you, I've just set up the e-commerce site and linked to the Square account, so far, pretty straightforward 😊

I know nothing about chilli's apart from the fact they give me hiccups and it tastes great in a dark chocolate ganache.

Excellent news that you have started work on the website. We have had a Square website for several years now and it works really well. They are so easy to setup and packed with great features with lots of new things in the pipeline. We also have a little shop with a Square POS and they just work so well. If your chilli's make it to fayres the little Square reader is a must to take card payments. It's all just so easy to have a business these days.

I have a little Square reader

Picsart_22-12-17_16-40-09-052.jpg

which I took to a pre Christmas Market (photo)

Only started up in June, making hot sauces, more flavour than heat but this year, I'm going for it.  28 varieties of chilli seeds sown, from 5k Scoville to 2.2m Scoville and a few heat variants in between (around 140 seeds in total)

Wow the stand looks great, we do a handful of fayres each Christmas so I cam appreciate the work you've put in. And now you have new varieties on the way, which means more products to draw your customers in with. I know there are a few chilli festivals in the summer months and they are really popular. Keep enjoying what you do!👍

I've got to grow the chillis first, but likewise, keep plugging away - one thing I've learn is that people buy from people, after all, people are the business

That's always a great starting point 😆. So what part of what you do, do you enjoy the most... the growing, sauce making or selling/meeting customers?

That's a good question, I like all of them, I meet people in my regular business, which has been established almost 7 years.

I enjoy growing chillis, to see which varieties grow quicker, usually the milder ones and the sauce making is enjoyable because its inventive i.e. I take the taste of things, from memory and piece them together in a recipe, tasting once it's cooked, but haven't had to add anything to those mixes yet.

What's the best thing about what you do?

We are a small artisan chocolatier, making chocolate for our little shop, online and for wholesale. I pretty much like all aspects of the business, from covering the shop and meeting the customers through to new product development. I must say I really enjoy the website side of things and really enjoy Square for this. We also use Square for our POS. The tech and innovation they bring to the party is great. It has so many positives, there are a few pinch points with the system which can cause some frustrations which I'm hoping they can tweak, but in the main its a really good system.

I used to eat huge amounts of the big brand chocolate, but not anymore.

But you're right about chillis and dark chocolate, as you mentioned before, I mean, it is a fruit, as long as its not too hot.

Something with less heat than a Cayenne (70k shu) but fruity, could work really well.

Maybe when I've grown them, I could send you some flake to trial 😉

Was going to suggest that Square online would be a perfect platform for you to quickly get an online presence going but you're already there!

We were at a Gin festival  last year and there was a Chilli Sauce vendor who was doin mad business. It all came down to the product branding. Small bottles, with tongue in cheek names. Perfect small gifts and as a consequence the sold pretty much everything day one. 'Food' for thought.

Here's the two i bought.

Hahahaha names you definitely wouldn't find in the supermarkets 🤣

I have a similar ilk, with some of the names but based around the chilli variety - 'Fire in Ya Hole' (Prairie Fire chilli), 'Evil in an A$$ Hat' (Scotch Bonnet) and a more tame 'You Know When you've been Mango’d', based on the flavour.

But with 28 varieties sown, I'm going to have to think of other names to match the chillis - 1,000 piece Jigs wh*re (Bleeding Jigsaw), Who you gonna call, Ghost B*stards? (Ghost) and F*ck me sideways, is that you Jesus? (Carolina Reaper) are also on the list but didn't fruit last year 🤷‍♂️

Hi Abigail,

I'm growing 28 varieties this year, so there's going to be a range of flavours and heat intensities.

I have a free square site, as the business is relatively new.

Sadly, I'm not exporting yet, the U.S. seems to have a lot of Red Tape with regards the FDA, but it's something I will be looking into.

I'll find you on Insta and follow 👍

If I can help you with your journey and I'm able to, just let me know

Dave.
