Photos being cropped on the product page

Hi there,

I'm uploading images for a photography business but when I view it on the website, the product page forces me to choose a ratio for all images. But all the photos are different as it's a photography business and I'd like to not be cropped, at least on the product page. Let me know if there's a solution for this, thanks!

It looks from the FAQ that you have an option to choose a square or rectangular ratio for display. From what I'm reading, you can enable the setting for all your images, or you can choose a setting for individual images.

This is from the FAQ:

Q: What about image ratio?

A: Product image ratio really comes into play on your โ€œShop Allโ€ and category pages where items are displayed alongside each other in rows.

The ratio setting in Store > Setup > General applies to all product photos, so consistency is more important than using a specific aspect ratio.

Photos come in two shapes: square (1:1 ratio) and rectangular (2:3/3:4 and 3:2/4:3 - portrait and landscape modes, respectively). If you use a mix of these, youโ€™ll likely end up with odd cropping and inconsistent results.

I can't find where to change the image crop settings. I'm guessing it's moved, but to where? TIA!

Thanks for posting, @Katswi  ๐Ÿ‘‹

I just want to make sure I'm understanding your request because this is an older thread that discusses different issues with photo cropping.

At the moment, it is only possible to select ONE ratio for all of your images. You cannot select a tall ratio for portrait images, and a wide ratio for landscape. This can cause some frustration for sellers, especially those that sell artwork.

That said, I believe you are correct that the setting on the backend has moved. ๐Ÿค” I can't seem to find it either. The alternative is to make the change to the ratio from within the site editor.

Click on Edit Site, then click the dropdown in the top left corner to view a list of your pages. Select any of the Items towards the bottom of the list to open the Item Details page. Click on the image itself and you will see a menu in the left panel with an option to edit the ratio. Whatever setting you select will update ALL of the images.

You can also edit the ratio of the Featured Items section, and the Shop All page by following similar steps.

Please let us know how this goes, and if you have any other questions. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks for weighing in @BernadetteA. I did finally find it, where you mentioned, in the Site Editor. There seems to be two tiers. I am in the process of checking if changes in one location trump the other or supplement it. Tier 1 (Edit Site > Shop All > Item List) indicates ALL images affected, whereas the other location I found options seems to parse things out like "all FEATURED images". Square support should update its help files when such changes are implemented. Screen grabs would help substantially.

Glad to hear you found the setting, @Katswi ๐Ÿ˜Š

We do have a team that updates resource articles, but things can change quickly around here and sometimes updates get overlooked or missed. I'll make sure to submit an internal request to verify which articles are out of date in regards to the image ratio settings.

Thanks so much for bringing this topic up! We definitely appreciate the heads up! โค๏ธ

I have the same issue with my fine art.  I can understand that the photos need to be a consistent size on the Shop All or Category pagea, but the individual item page should show the actual photo as it is on file, not a cropped version!
