after after entering the sale I swipe the card but the reader doesn't recognize it. I then have to and enter the number manually. Taking too much time am I missing a step?

Does Square recognize that there's a reader plugged in? A message should appear on your screen when plugging in the magstripe reader, and a message would be on the top of the screen with the contactless reader connected. You can also check if a reader is connected by going to the Card Readers section of Settings. If no reader appears here, you'll need to troubleshoot for your reader. Which one do you have?
