connection issues

Saturday, 8-25-24 between 7:00ish and 9:00pm EST, my square app would not connect to the internet in order to process purchases.  I have an iPhone 15 and use Verizon cell service.  I restarted my phone at least 15 times.  The error messages received were "we're unable to connect Tap to Pay. Please restart Square Point of Sale or your iPhone", and " Reader Requires Internet Connection. There was a problem connecting to the Internet. Confirm your internet connection is working and try again." and "Payment failed, Square encountered an unexpected error. Please try again or contact support if the problem continues, Cancel Payment.  

I had what appeared to be ample cell coverage.  This cost me no less than $100 and I'll need to consider a different POS if there's no conclusion to this experience

Hey @freezedaddymd.  Sorry to hear you had problems, but I’m happy they are resolved now. I do not see any incidents with connections on issquareup.com for that time period, so I’m suspicious that this was indeed a Square issue.  For the records, just because our phones appear to have ample cell coverage does NOT mean that the cell data stream was working.  Verizon could have been working fine for cell phone calls but not for data service.  Of course, no one can confirm that now, but since you are the only Square seller to complain about this, it does point more to your device or data service than it does to Square.

 

Of course, you are free to switch card processors.  Just be aware that all of them have occasional issues and none of them are 100% perfect.  If you switch every time, you will soon run out of possibilities.  This is exactly why I have a backup processor, though.  I have Stripe full configured to switch over to so that at least I can run cards IF Square is indeed down for card processing.  Of course, in this case, if what I suspect is true that would hot have worked either since I’m betting the problem was in your ISP and not Square.  But since you didn’t say whether or not you tried to use your web browser or other internet app, there’s no way to know for sure.

I'm sorry to hear about the connection issues you experienced with your Square app on Saturday. It sounds frustrating. 

 

There are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

 

1) Check for App Updates: Make sure your Square app is updated to the latest version. Sometimes, issues like this are resolved in newer updates.

 

2) Verify Network Settings: Although you had cell coverage, it might help to double-check your network settings. Ensure that no settings or restrictions are affecting the app's ability to connect.

 

3) Is it just tap to pay payments that would not work?
