Using a chip reader, it evidently charged $150 without asking for a signature. How to avoid this?

I didn't enter any of the other cc information, and was testing the chip reader with my own card (not linked).

There is an option to turn off the signature requirement for purchases under $25, but a larger purchase would bring up the signature screen. Is it possible that you accidentally hit the Done Signing button? The signature screen will come up automatically but doesn't require anything specific for a "signature."

I don't think I did that since the signature screen never came up at all.  But I am new to Square.

@VanKalkerFarms - Thanks for the help!

@PeggyN - This was most likely a Cash or Other Tender transaction. This option wouldn't have required a signature. It is available for organizational purposes only. It allows you to record all the types of payments you accept.

No funds would have actually been processed. Did you see a charge on your credit card account? Would you mind double checking?

Hi everyone,

I have noticed that one time a few months ago, a customer was gabbing away and didn't sign the screen. She left it, and didn't hear me ask her to "please sign for the transaction." while she was chatting, the transaction was approved. I don't know what the time period is while waiting for a signature, but in my case, I sure wish that it would have declined or voided or something. Just to save my skin, and make a point to her to pay attention to the transcion instad of her friends for two whole seconds. I know she didn't sign for it, but I handed her the receipt anyhow.

My question here is, how long does the system wait for a signature?

@Stellar732 That is a great question!

Customers can actually complete the payment without signing their actual signature.

However, payments are automatically voided if they aren't finished within 5 minutes or the app is interrupted.

Yeah, @EJ_

I don't know if the who "no signature required" thing is a good idea.

Am i alone in this?

It seems to leave us merchants in a funny spot regarding liability!

I mean, deciding to swipe chip cards brings up a screen warning us about liability, so wouldnt this also be a concern?

@Stellar732 I definitely understand your concern.

You should always make sure your customer completes the payment by signing their signature and then hitting "Done Signing" to complete the payment.

However, a payment will automatically void if "Done Signing" is never selected after about 5 minutes.

In order for the "Done Signing" option to light up blue and become available, customers (or the seller) will need to populate the signature area with some form of writing/signature.

See below:

If you choose to write in the signature box to complete the payment, it's always good to note what happened in the event you run into a Disputed payment later on down the line.

And even if this does occur, our Disputes Team is always there to have your back!
