I have iPads that have been in Square stand 24/7 for 4+ years and they are fine and the battery capacity is still at 75% of brand new. There is circuitry inside the iPad and basically, all electronic devices that handle the charging and not charging cycles. while you could unplug the square stand to remove the power I'm not sure that the rest of the features, like the USB hub, will work without power.
