My Square Register has been stuck in software update at around 80% for a half hour.

Hello @taylormead I'm sorry you're having trouble with your Square Register. Usually an update doesn't take much more than 5 minutes. Can you try to power down the register and see if it will reboot and restart the update?

I tried that a few times and it just resumed the frozen update. After about an hour it fixed itself.

Ok, so @taylormead are you good now with your Register? Is it up and running for you?

yes
I am having the same problem. We only use our register once a week or so and about half the times I turn it on it starts download software updates. It hangs for 30 to 60 minutes or more. Sometimes the status bar will increment for a while before it hangs. Sometimes not. If I power off and back on, sometimes it will start up normally and other times it just returns to the hung state. The system is pretty worthless like this, honestly.

Hey there @AlanL
It seems that you may have missed our notification/email regarding Square Register Updates taking longer than usual. Our advice now is to "Keep your device plugged in and powered on overnight." so that this problems don't occur. You can read more about this update here.

Yes, I did miss that email. Thank you for pointing it out. Is it OK to leave it turned on for week or more unused?

Yeah, it's okay if anything, turning it on the day before it will be used is also a good idea. After all, what we are looking to avoid is waiting for a long update to finish @AlanL.
