We have two readers which give hardware errors - do readers expire over time they have not been used for a while?

Hi @SJA703, thanks for flagging this in the Seller Community and sorry to hear you're running into this.
Readers don't expire, however, it sounds like yours may be damaged, it's hard to know what may have caused this.
I'd suggest filing a warranty claim for both so that we can get some new ones out to you as soon as possible. I'll leave all of the relevant information at the bottom of this message.
In the meantime, you can still take manual payments through Square Invoices, Square Online Checkout Links, Virtual Terminal, or Manual Entry, however, the fees are slightly higher for these payments so I'll leave the information on Square’s fees by payment type here for you to review.
Please let me know if there's anything I can help with here.
Warranty info:
You can file a warranty claim for your Square contactless and chip card reader online in the Square Shop.
After completing the claim, you should see your replacement in about 2–3 days. Make sure you send us your old hardware within 14 days of receiving your replacement. Square will cover the delivery costs. A postage label will be provided when completing your warranty claim.
If we don’t receive your old reader within 14 days of receiving your new one, we’ll assume you want to keep it and the cost of the new hardware will be charged to your credit card on file.
