Can I use letters in my sku's?

I have created a list of items all with skus with letters in them. Will these sku's work with square retail? Will the barcodes be scannable with a barcode scanner into square retail?

With Square for Retail, you can assign SKU's with letters to your items, then print labels with scannable barcodes tied to that items SKU.
