conflict between item name and variation name

HI,

I am new here. I download the excel inventory form,  filled it in and tried to up load but got the error message that the item and its variation must have the same descriptions (see pix below). Since I don't have variations is there a problem with my naming of items and categories? I have nothing is the Variation column. I have seen obscure references in comments about the necessity of having "same names" but it is never explicit enough to figure out what is the problem. I am a potter and have mostly unique items but several items names could be "bowl" or "vase" with more info in the description. The same name "bowl," for example, also could be in the category column. Is there any written instruction in help that explains why this is happening? Or does anybody have a fix for it?

Thanks for your post, @chacheek1. It sounds like the formatting might have gotten changed during your edits. For example, if a comma is removed from the wrong place it will alter the columns for the rest of the CSV. You might want to import the CSV you have into something like Google Sheets, then review what you see there to see what those rows have in them. If everything looks weird then I'd re-do your edits from a fresh export.

Thanks AdamB for replying but I am using Excel. I have found that if I make sure none of the item names are the same then I can upload without a problem. I don't know why Square can't say in their page on downloading and uploading in there nice chart on each of the columns that the item name MUST be unique. Or did I miss that.

Were the items exported from your Square account with the same name, or were these just new items you added to the sheet later?

I am just starting. I downloaded the form (empty) and filled it in. For the item names (all new) I called several bowls and several others vases. I have fixed that. I have not used variations and probably will not. I put "variation" in my post because that is the error message I got.
