We wanted to take a moment to share some resources to help you prepare and stay informed throughout the unpredictable seasonable weather. As many sellers located on the coast are well aware, hurricane season has begun but there are many other weather events that could severely disrupt your business. Read on for checklists and social media accounts where you can stay up to date.
Hurricane Preparedness with the SBA
The Small Business Association (SBA) has developed several programs to support communities affected by hurricanes and has information about how small businesses can prepare for the hurricane season or storm in the forecast.
Some key steps shared by the SBA to being prepared include:
- Establish a communications plan and subscribe to local emergency management alerts.
- Review insurance coverage, consider business interruption insurance, and take a video inventory of property and assets.
- Practice and test your plan with managers and staff.
Read the SBS’s comprehensive Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Plan online. And learn more about how to apply for a loan if you need financial support for business following a major storm or natural disaster.
Other Ways to Prepare
There are a variety of checklists available online to help you prepare for any eventuality:
- Preparing for a Hurricane or Other Tropical Storm Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC)
- How do I Prepare my Business for an Emergency, Department of Homeland Security
- Preparedness Checklists and Toolkits, FEMA
- Prepare for emergencies, US Small Business Administration (SBA)
- Preparing for a Disaster (Taxpayers and Businesses), IRS
How to Stay Informed
Many U.S. government agencies provide storm warnings and storm watch alerts, and they share support and resources in the wake of a major event. They frequently share updates on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms:

I wanted to share this Red Cross Hurricane Safety article too, for anyone in Florida preparing for Hurricane Ian. The Red Cross has put together guidelines about evacuating, sheltering in place, and they provide a list of emergency supplies.
I'm also attaching the Red Cross Hurricane Safety Checklist as a PDF.
