Is there any way to separate retail from service from the total so the retail is tip exempt?

Hi there!

Square currently applies tips to the total amount of a sale. There isn't a way to have the tip amounts applied on an item or service level basis only, but that is definitely a request I'll be sending over to our Product Team.

One work around that comes to mind would be to ring up your customer for two payments, separating the service and the retail items.

Hopefully one of your fellow sellers can chime in and provide their own work flow that they use.

Less tips means less money for Square, they don't give a crap about anything but the bottom line.  They will never

add this feature because they are a money hungry mega corp.  Ugh.

It's currently 2023... the question was first posed in 2016 and there's still no fix? What?

As a retail and service store, the prompt for a tip should ONLY show up if there is a service.  (I'm pretty sure the database has been designed to designate services).  Then if there are services and retail products ONLY calculate tips based on the services.

add a flag (isServiceOrder).  If T then show TIP and amount of services.  If F then don't show TIP.

I am referring to the preset tipping option, which displays a variety of tipping percentages for the client to choose from. That way the client does not have to do the math to determine the tip amount. If you are checking out a client that is paying for service and retail in one transaction, the tipping calculator bases the math on the entire total. Other systems have worked this out, so the tipping is only based on the service total. If there is an option which elements a step for myself and my clients, that what I will choose. It doesn’t make sense to add extra work for either party, when it’s not necessary. I ended up going with another product for this reason alone.

Obviously I can calculate the tip, but the point is for the software to do it for me. And my client.

We need to be able to tip by category. Our business is a mix of our legacy products, which we do not allow tipping, and our in house cafe. We allow tipping on cafe items, but if a customer purchases both we need tips to not be calculated on non-cafe items! Tiger has to be a way without inconveniencing the customer to do 2 transactions.

Hi @MarkDCY,

Thanks for reaching out to the community about this, and for letting us know why this would be beneficial to your business specifically.

I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with an existing thread, where other Square Sellers have discussed this topic in the past. We sometimes merge similar conversations together to make them easier to find, and to help our product teams gauge support for feature requests.

Unfortunately, the ability to limit tipping at an item or category level is still a feature request at this time. I’ll be sure to keep a close eye on any conversations about this, and update the tread if there are any plans to update the tipping rules in the future.

I'm in the same boat with this topic as well.. we offer services and clients often purchase retail items as well. It's inconvenient to have to manually break apart the services and retail so they can calculate their gratuity or do separate transactions. There has to be a simple toggle option for which items / services can have gratuity added. This should be an important item on the feature request list for Square!
