Hi there!
Square currently applies tips to the total amount of a sale. There isn't a way to have the tip amounts applied on an item or service level basis only, but that is definitely a request I'll be sending over to our Product Team.
One work around that comes to mind would be to ring up your customer for two payments, separating the service and the retail items.
Hopefully one of your fellow sellers can chime in and provide their own work flow that they use.
There isn't one, we posted about this also.
Start a thread on Instagram and let us know. Let’s blow this issue up and get it fix. A lot of small businesses that use Instagram would love to know this before going with Square. I see a post from 2017 about this and they still won’t fix this.
This makes me so mad that they have not fixed this problem. It should be like applying tax to items and not a service, you get to choose if tip is applied to a service or a product! Have you found a different system that allows you to do that. I’ll dump Square in a heartbeat!
Is there a way to see your clients retail purchases separate from their service purchase?

Hey @deboraham12,
I moved your post to one of the existing threads for this question.
At the time, there's still not a way to separate the two on the total. The only way would be running two separate sales.

Thank you. Running two sales would be a pain and waste time. It would be nice to search the client and see a list of their product purchases without having to comb through every sale. Food for thought.

I'm still waiting for the the option to have tipping only be calculated on the service provided! Not product!! This is a basic necessity and I can't believe Square has not addressed it. Seperating sales from services on two seperate tickets is causing service providers to not get credit for their sales because of needing to assign the sales ticket to them. This requires too many steps at checkout! Who pays tips on purchased products anyway? 🤔
I’m so over them not fixing this issue. It really can’t be that hard for them to add a toggle button, like they have for adding tax to a retail item and not have it added to the service on the same ticket!!
I would also like for this to be an option, it has me looking at other POS options for this main reason.

Please make tipping connected to categories a possibility. I'm a dog groomer with a boutique shop, and I have people that tip on regular purchases, because it pops up as prompt. Most of the time I can skip it in time, but occasionally they see it and either think. "Why is she asking for a tip?", or they leave one! I don't want that option. I think it's tacky to prompt for a tip on a dog food or toy purchase, but I want the option on my grooming services. It also applies the percentage to the entire tab. I only want the tip percentage applied to my grooming services. Hope that makes sense. Thank you for considering!
Hey @Fetch22, thanks for bringing this up. I noticed that the issue you raised was also mentioned by a handful of sellers — I moved your post to this thread where we are keeping track of feedback. I wasn't able to find a specific timeline for when automatically separating tip amounts between items vs. services may come online, but we'll certainly announce here as soon as something becomes available. Hope this helps clarify a bit more for now though let me know if any other questions remain.

Sure. I just really wish it would quit prompting for a tip when I'm just ringing up my shopping customers. Being able to attach the tipping option to a category would solve that for me! Instead, I have to quickly bypass the tip screen for the MAJORITY of my transactions, but occasionally I'm not fast enough and I'll have customers tip on a retail purchase! I've even gone back in and requested a refund for the tip, because I find it unacceptable. Thanks for looking into making it a reality for us.
Here we are August, 2022 and still not answer to this issue. 6 years? That should have been plenty of time to figure this out. Please make this possible.
As a work around, I placed 0% in all the suggested tip setting which removed them and disabled smart tipping so the screen just says "custom tip" and "no tip" ... I still get some complaints about people who want hit 20% button and walk but it's the easiest way I found so far.
What system do you use? I’m going to have to switch.

Hello there @PivConPT
There is a way to not have commissions on Items vs Services but not on Tips at this time. I recommend you submit a Feature Request here. This will help our product team get visibility and track other Sellers with similar interest in your request.
Important: When submitting a request, make sure to include the desired feature, and provide the details of how this feature will help your business succeed (how would you use it and what you expect from it).
P.S. Welcome to the Seller Community

@SquareCan you please create an item level or category level setting for gratuity? I can't believe how far back these comments go with no resolution! Our business sells merchandise and retail items online and it is not right for customers to have to manually zero out the gratuity area. It makes it seems like we (our business) is trying to get gratuity for these things, but the gratuities are really just intended for our food & beverage items.
This honestly can't be that challenging. Gratuity simply needs to be dictated by category level so when a client checks out for their service but also buys a shirt or jewelry the suggested gratuity is only calculated based on the price of the service.
This case as been open for a really long time. Super disappointing
