How can I record what was sold when using the Custom Amount feature to process a payment?

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Adding Miscellaneous Item?

Hello! Let me start this by saying that we are a hardware store currently using the Square Register. We were previously using Epos Now for our POS system, but it was nothing but an issue from the get go. Square is so much easier, and all around better, but we were wondering if there was a way to add a miscellaneous item as well as the price? We do use the Add Custom Amount feature on the terminal while we are getting the prices/items put into the system, but we have not been able to find a way to add a note or text to the custom amount so that we, as well as the customer know what has been purchased. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

Hello @hilltophardware

Welcome to Square! You're right that it's probably the easiest PoS out there. I've been banging on it for over 10 years now and continually am amazed at the ease of use and the amount of data you can glean from your sales.

For your custom amounts, you can definitely add notes to the item. Once you've entered the amount and the Custom Amount shows up in the "tape" on the right side of the screen, just tap on it. A new window will appear. Near the bottom of that window is a Notes section. Anything you type in this box will show up under the Custom Amount title on the screen and receipts.

That said, I do recommend moving quickly to getting all your items inputted. The Custom Amount item is pretty limiting when it comes to reporting. There is no way to separate these items so you can see what sells.

I realize this is an old question but is there a way to edit the custom amount or add a note after the sale has been completed?  I just sold an item out of my store room that I hadn't entered into Square yet. I entered the custom amount and now would like to edit it or add a note after the fact.  Thank you!

@freethinkerstx ;

I do not believe you can edit a transaction in Square after it is completed.

Just ran into this problem myself! What I ended up doing was making an Exchange, and just added the items I wanted on the ticket. Once you have added the items, on the bottom in the blue button it should say Even Exchange.
