Discounts with purchase rules that aren't applied automatically

I am trying to create a discount that is not automatically applied, but has purchase rules. We sell food items and anyone who pays with SNAP-EBT receives a 50% discount on fruits and vegetables with a cap of $50. I can make a discount rule and set it to only apply to the categories of fruits and vegetables for 50% and with a cap of $50 BUT it applies to every transaction. I need to apply it only if they are eligible (paying with SNAP) once everything has already been rung up.

It takes too long to go through item by item to apply the discount and it's not easy to see when the $50 limit has been reached.

I tried to create a coupon to work around this but when I select that the coupon be applied to "category" it only applies the discount to one item within that category not the category as a whole.

I also tried to set up the discount to be applied by category if I select the customer as "SNAP shopper" but I can't apply two rules to the same discount.

Anyone have any work arounds?

@LEAP4LocalFood Welcome to the community and also nice work with what you're doing!

You're right! You can't set up two conditions on a discount, I went in to test thinking that you must be able to and it's just hard to find - but no, I can't see a way to do it either!

The only way I can think is still sooooo manual - just doing all the fruit and veg first and seeing what the sub total is and doing a manual discount for 50%. This is obviously far from ideal, and would also need to you know how the customer is paying before you start.

I'll come back to this if I can think of anything but will also tag in @ryanwanner as he knows the retail side better than me and also @TheRealChipA as while he's also restaurant based like me he's got a good work around head on his shoulders!

Unfortunately no workaround ideas here.  The stickler is mostly in the ‘only applies if paying by SNAP’ condition which as you’ve learned is just not possible in conjunction with another condition (is fruit and veggies). Complex discount conditions is not something Square supports at this time.  Also, the maximum discount has never worked at the cart level — it only works at the item level so a $50 limit of total discounts for a transaction isn’t possible.

Otherwise, @LEAP4LocalFood., I’m confused by this statement:

“I tried to create a coupon to work around this but when I select that the coupon be applied to "category" it only applies the discount to one item within that category not the category as a whole.”

I created a test discount for a category, and then added multiple items from that category to my cart.  All of those items were discounted as they should have been.  So, for that part I’d need to see your discount definition to ascertain what you need to fix there.  That might not matter, though, since at least two of your requirements for automatic discounts are not able to be implemented.

A discount applied to a category works fine for me. It's when I try to set up a coupon to apply to a category that it just picks one item within  that category to apply the coupon to instead of the whole category.
