Did I make a huge mistake buying square?

Run a thrift store, have no inventory, no SKU's, just 12 departments. someone buys a men's shirt it is a $3 sale in men's clothing, someone buys a $500 thing from mens, it is still just a $500 sale in men's clothing.

My sales rep convinced me that Square could simply do this in categories, so I set those up, and now it's not working correctly.  Then a (non-robot) support person said they were items another one (all online chatting) said perhaps, but that isn't working either.  Cannot find a definition of their terms, no idea what a token is except for the NY subway.

I cannot relay to anyone how much I hate the support robots when trying to find an answer. This is day two and I feel like I've made a huge mistake with Square.  Can anyone tell me it gets better??

Hey @MichaelWID

I'd love to hear a little bit more of how you run your items.

It sounds like you're not too picky about tracking things in depth, so here's what I would suggest:

1. Set up your Categories

2. Set up a single item in each of those Categories, with the same name as the category name

3. Set these items to be Variable Priced, so when you ring them up, you manually type in the price.

That should do it!

Let me know if this makes sense or works, or if you have any other questions!

THANKS
That is what I had done, but I could not find anything, I mean anything, that was helpful for a simple sales tracking.  I could not convince my sales rep that we had no tracking of inventory or SKU's or whatever.  People give us crap, sometimes decent crap, we price it and sell it. End of story.  It was embarrassing, and still, I was told by others that Square was the easiest way to go.

Whoever designed the support chat help robot has a very high place in hell, if you ask me. Thanks for your help.

No problem at all! Happy to help!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having no inventory or SKU's - it's not so different from food service in that respect - basic tracking works just fine!

And if you ever want to change things and track more, it's easy to do so too!

I've been using square for almost 10 years, and it's definitely the easiest and best way to go that I've found. Just like any other system, you need to figure out the methods that work for you, and once you do, you're golden!

I'm glad I could help!
