Tips Suggestions based on total bill (not post-discounts)

Tips Suggestions based on total bill (not post-discounts)

Hi -when using the tip suggestions feature the suggestions are being calculated after discounts are given (or after a gift card amount is applied). This is negatively impacting the income of staff.

It would be helpful if the tip suggestions were calculated based on the total purchase price (prior to discounts being applied or gift cards being used for payment). Currently, staff have to nicely let customers know that if they'd like to customize their tip based on the original total that they can do so by selecting the Customize button. Some staff feel awkward doing this and are not being tipped based upon the full service that they have provided.

Hey @lostdruid - Thanks for submitting this Feature Request.

I've updated the status to "Open". This step in the Feature Request process will be a time in which other Square Sellers can add their use cases to your idea to make it stronger and demonstrate further how much it is needed. Later on, we'll re-visit the most popular feature requests in the "Open for Votes" status and bring them to our Product Team.

To other Sellers who see this feature, please “like” the post and reply with a use case that your business would have. This will help to signal that this feature request is even more important to address.

Tips should be calculated before discounts and taxes. This option exists for taxes, but not discounts. I am losing hundreds of dollars each event because of this. The square app is wrong!!
please fix!

We also need this feature.

We try to make the customer aware that when using the smart tip button for a tip, the system uses  the discounted total when using a gift card and not the original amount of the check.  Our host/register station is usually very busy and we are often taking care of several customers at the same time.  More often than not, we miss the opportunity to give them this information and our servers are missing out on tip income because of this.

We're currently implementing a reservation deposit for larger groups and that amount is going to be discounted on the final check.

Coming up in the Spring, our Mother's Day and Easter Buffets will be reservations only we will be taking a deposit for every single reservation.  Each of those deposits will be discounted on the check.  We would have to go through the spiel regarding the discounted amount every single time someone pays their bill on Mother's Day.  Nightmare.

Please implement Smart Tipping based on total bill.

I agree.  I’ll add that it might be smart to allow sellers to have a setting to make this decision for their business, rather than making it one-size-fits all.  I have no doubt that some businesses do not want “this look” for their business.  But I definitely understand the need for not penalizing tipped employees because of the business’ discounts and loyalty program.  It makes sense for many.

I am a small pop up restaurant with only 35 seats. I have implemented a reservation fee to hold seats to help deter folks from ghosting. I then subtract this reservation fee (discount fixed amount) from the final bill. Smart tipping is suggesting tips based off the amount still owed, not the full amount of the dinner!

I had a situation where someone reserved a table for 6 and paid the reservation deposit (20pp= $120). When it came time to settle the bill, the three couples at the table paid separately. The person who had paid the reservation deposit had the total amount discounted from her bill - so a $150 check - $120 prepaid, the balance due was $30. Smart tipping calculated 20% as $6.00... it should be $30. At the end of a 3+ hour meal, having had wine and full bellies, people are not paying attention or wanting to do math.

I have created a chart for tipping, but it is kinda awkward. I am currently looking for a different CC processing solution if necessary. This is too bad, because it is not necessary. There is a choice to calculate tips before or after taxes - so why not before or after discounts/ etc. ???

My business NEEDS this feature!! There are several scenarios in which we are losing money over this. I run a facial business where we work with a subscription model; we have gift cards and offer promotional discounts regularly. It is very common to tip 20% on services like this but my esthetician could be tipped closer to 2% on gift cards/subscription services without this feature. Many people do not feel comfortable telling customers they should do their own math and tip accordingly. This should be a simple fix!!! Please add this feature!!!

I run a tour company and need this feature as well. Our deposits are $200 and I cant use the tip feature or I get tipped on the balance not the total amount.

We can use this feature ASAP. We run a winery tasting room where Club Members get free wine flights and discounts on other purchases. A group of 4 will come in, get their free flights, some small food items, maybe another glass of wine...and have a $20 bill instead of the $80-$100 retail it would normally be. They hit 20% tip thinking they're hooking their server up, yet they're tipping $4 on a $100 retail bill.

If there's even a way to just display a bill overview on the tip screen, showing total prior to discounts, I'd take that as a win. Sometimes customers would tip more, they just don't have the info in front of them at the time they're tipping. We were going to start walking customers thru their printed bill, but those do not even show a pre-discounted amount. We have to print out the bill before adding the discounts, then print out a second after adding the discounts so we can walk customers thru their savings.

But as a developer in my day job as well, it doesn't seem like it'd be difficult to had a second option in the settings to calculate tip pre/post tax AND pre/post discount.

Just add the option here!Just add the option here!

Hello @MikeL-Reserve,

I appreciate you reaching out and providing this feedback. I completely understand your concern and your employees deserve to be tipped fully for the service they give. At this time request is still in open status. We field thousands of feature requests each week here on the Seller Community, and bringing these features to fruition often takes an ample amount of time and effort from our engineers. We want to ensure that our releases are not just surface-level products, but the best all-around resources to help you grow your business. I understand that it might be difficult waiting for something to be built out and greatly appreciate your patience while our team continues to monitor feedback on this request. Your input is valuable!

This issue has been requested for the past 6 years. We must have this feature period.

Employees are being penalized when the restaurant/ cafe/ salon/ etc. uses Squares Loyalty feature to give discounts to customers. Employees are not happy and its not right.

Shall we drop Squares Loyalty program and save the $45+ a month fee for it?

Add a setting like the tip before or after taxes button- tip before or after discount!. It's that simple.

In another post, a Square rep suggested telling the customer that the tip suggestions shown are based on the discounted price. We're in the business of service- not putting out our customers to have to do the math in their head or whip out a calculator. It's tacky and awkward for everyone. Employees still get shorted. And we need our employees!

Square will make more money on cc fees with this option. Look at that, a win-win.
