Is there a way to emphasize or highlight a food allergy on a ticket?

I am looking for a way to notify my kitchen staff of a food allergy on the ticket without having to verbally confirm that they see it on there.  As of right now, the ticket prints in as a modifier - which can get lost in subs and removals... let me know if you have a way to highlight or emphasize that OR if you have any tips on how to let them know

Hi @SeeYouInHealth.  If you’re looking for a foolproof way, such as a button they have to press on a KDS, the answer is there is not.  Back in the day when I had food service, I resorted to a couple of things.  But they all still require that our employees do the jobs we actually pay them to do.  Thankfully, in 8 years of food service we didn’t have any issues.  Here’s what I did.

  1. I made the text of the allergy modifiers frustrating.  I added lots to “******” to the front and back, causing them to wrap over a few lines.  AND THOSE ENTRIES WERE IN ALL CAPS, TOO! Lol
  2. I also added a no-charge item called “**** ALLERGY ALERT *****” which we put at the beginning and end of the checks, as well as after the item with the allergy modifier.
  3. And, just be sure that my line cooks weren’t hung over and apathetic, I had the servers check in.  I know that you are trying to avoid that, but it was the only foolproof way to keep my customers safe.

In the end, I can’t think of anything Square could do that would give us the peace of mind that a verbal check-in hopefully gives us.  Maybe someone else has an idea, but that’s what I’ve got!

Best,

Chip
