What are your thoughts on using the Square Terminal as a printer?

What are your thoughts on using the Square Terminal as a printer?  We have the Square Stand with an I-Pad and are now looking at options for printing customer receipts.

Hello @kbraun !

If all you're planning on using the Terminal for is to print receipts, I'd recommend looking into a regular thermal printer that can hook directly to the stand. The terminal isn't really a receipt printer per se, although it can be used as one if needed. Just be sure to get a printer that is known to work with the Stand. This compatibility page should help.

If you decide to use the terminal, you have a couple of different ways to go about receipt printing:

-Set the terminal in Connected Mode, where it links to your stand and acts as one of those remote credit card terminals. Your customer can print receipts there. For cash sales, the terminal is supposed to allow for receipt printing, but I've never made it work in the field.

-Keep the terminal in the standard mode and print receipts via the transactions history. Close the tickets out as usual on the stand then once it's in the transactions list you can print a receipt from the terminal. As long as the terminal is online the transactions list updates pretty quickly.

Hope this helps!

It works great for us, the customer can choose if they would like a receipt printed or not. There is no cutting mechanism on the terminal, so sometimes the receipt edge is a little jagged from people pulling at the receipt instead of ripping it from one side to the other. Sometimes, the customers leave their receipt; maybe because they don’t understand that they must rip the receipt off themselves.

We just started using the Square Terminal (we upgraded from the Stand, with the iPad) and it connects to the same thermal printer without any issues.  We have an Epson receipt printer, I believe it was one recommended 5-ish years ago when we got the Square Stand originally.

It's all plug-and-play so it's easy to set up.  We are finding, though, that most customers are choosing the email or text receipt (or no receipt at all) when they are given the option.
