The square register app requires consent to access m PC camera, microphone, and files, and location.

The square register app requires consent to access m PC camera, microphone, and requires I consent to accessing my files, and my location!  Why does square need that?  My old credit card machine needed none of those things.

As a private person I do not like having an open camera and microphone they can turn on and monitor anytime.  But, as a lawyer, with confidential communications going on in my office with my clients, to allow such eavesdropping and accessin confidential files might be violating my lawyer's duty of confientiality.  Anyone else feel the same way?

And how do we contact Square to register our concerns?   Their websites "contact" link just sends us to this community forum, with no number to call them at.

Hi @Oak, thank you for taking the time to reach out and raise this concern.

In order for the Square Register app to function on your mobile device, these permissions must be enabled:

  • Camera
  • Contacts
  • Geo-location
  • Microphone

For more information on why the app needs to access these permissions, please have a look at this table in our Support Center. If these are not enabled, the app will not be able to communicate with your device.

I hope this helps clear things up. If you'd like to discuss any account specifics, please don't hesitate to contact us via email or phone. We'll be happy to assist! 🙂

I was told, when I called, that I would be able to disable some of these functions, while I am not using Square.  I hope so.

Thx I will call.  Granting open camera and mic access in a law office seems an opportunity to lose ones lawyer license.

Sorry: The table your reply speaks of Square's need to access my account logo, profile images, and item images.  I have no acccount logo, profile imagfes and what "item images" do you trefer to?   And if I did what does that have to do with credit card processing? You have not, I believe, satisfactorally answered why a credit card processor needs access to a cell phone's camera - especially in a law office office.  And I have similar concerns about an open mic in a law office with confidential communications.   I am not sure State Bar Associations will allow cameras and microphones in a law office, and I don't think my clients would feel comfortable if I toild them about cameras and mics I can't control.  Can the camera aceees be turned off (denied)?  Can the mic acccess be denied until a transaction, or is there a card scanner that can be attached another way?

Regarding my questrion about why I must agree to Square having access to my cell phone's camera and microphone, espeecially in a law offfice:  I read your message inviting me to call you at Square and I clicked on the link your message gave to call you.  But when I clicked on that link I got this messsage, "You do not have sufficient privileges for this resource or its parent to perform this action.  Click your browser's Back button to continue."

Please message me a real phone number to call you, instead of a link.  Thanks

The reason Square Register needs access to your microphone is to "listen" to the Square Mag Stripe Reader plugged into your headphone jack.  without that the app can not comunicate with the reader.  The location/GPS is because square is a mobile payment solution so it is able to use your location to print on the emailed and texted receipts where the transaction took place and to mitigate fraud.

It only has access to these items when it is open and running on your phone or ipad.  It does not connect to your pc camera or files.

https://squareup.com/code

go to that link

chose a product from the drop down.  (Square Register)

Click "call us"

your code and the phone number will apear there.

@VanKalkerFarms - Thanks for sharing!

@Oak - As a follow up, it sounds like you'd appreciate more details about the camera portion of the app permissions. Many Square merchants upload images to their items, using the camera on their smartphone/device is the easiest way to do this. Feel free to disable all of these permission when you're not using the app. You'll just need to make sure and flip them back on when you're ready to take payments. Feel free to check out more details on our security policy here

While Square will insist that accessing your camera, photos, & microphone is "necessary" to process charges, we all know that doesn't pass the smell test.  Square continues to collect & commodify your data (your clients data).  They will do so until federal regulation is established. Sad.

Square requires access to your microphone to monitor & commodify your business data.  Any claim to the contrary is obvious b.s. Square, like most online platforms, will continue to do so until regulated by law.  Write your government reps with your concern. Toggle off your microphone & location privacy settings when not accepting payments.

How do I disable Square's access to these things when I am not using Square?  I do not want Square to have unfettered access to these features all the time.

@HappyHomestead - You would just need to toggle these permissions off from the privacy settings.

Really? Do you expect people are going to toggle the settings on and off each time?  You know people are going to give up and give up their right not to have an open camera and microphone in their office under your control. Talk about Big Brother.   There is no need for an open camera or microphone in a person's office.  If mercahants want to add photos that's fine;  That's one shot, give them another way to do it that does not require the camera and microphone to be constantly on in a law office.

It's not that there is an open camera taking pictures and an open microphone recording your conversations. It's that you gave the app permission to use it (unlike the old days when programs just had unfettered access to your computer).

The access to the microphone is how the square reader communicates with the phone hardware and then the app.

This is isn't some black market app you're illegally downloading that has a bunch of spyware in it, like when people pirate software. It's a program but a publicly traded company that would have been outed by the white hat hackers long ago if it was spying on you.

If anything, be more worried about your own government illegally listening to everything said on a phone call, or hacking into the trunk line of isps and intercepting whatever data it wants,  "just in case they need to go back to it later."

The excuse for microphone access has been that the device uses the headset jack; however, on the newer iphones that do not have a headset jack, that is NOT the case, yet on these phones, Square STILL requires mic permission, and not just to use the reader, but even for something where the reader is not required at all, such as viewing old transactions!! Come on and be honest, Square- you just want this to listen in; it is completely unnecessary with these new phones, but you still require it.  Instagram at least is honest about the fact it listens in on its consumers (and also offers a toggle where you can turn off their ability to do so); you are instead following the path of Facebook, which continues to deny it listens in, despite the fact ads appear right after you have verbally discussed something. You are also making up excuses that are no longer relevant.

Even though there's not a dedicated audio jack, the app will still function the same way. The lightning port is universal - you could headphones with it if you have the right adapter. You can read more about why certain apps need access to certain features in this article on permissions in our Help Center.

Hello @coll1 The POS app only uses bluetooth to pair with the contactless and chip card reader. You can certainly remove these permissions when you're not using the app, but you'll need to remember to re-enable each one to accept payments.

This is a waste of time dealing with you. I get a stupid answer to my problem and you do not recognize the issue. My computer has to go through the entire damned set up every time I use the square tile!!!! I got one reply to the email I sent 2 months ago from a smart assed kid who just told me to go through all the steps I have to go through multiple TIMES A DAY, EVEN THOUGH I JUST ACCEPTED A PAYMENT!!! This isn't working for me, and I will be leaving you soon.

💯same issue with Square's ongoing microphone access requirement. Until we get some regulation in place, tech will continue to commodify us. I toggle my privacy settings when not using the app. (On my iPad: Settings>Privacy>Microphone.)
