Inactive Location Preventing Transfer of Ownership

Hello,

We are a small library that recently added Square so our patrons may pay off charges, or purchase fundraising items. The person who set it up created two accounts, one of which was for testing purposes and is now inactive. However, that person has since left this business. I'm trying to transfer the ownership, but Square seems to say we can't do that with an inactive/deactivated location? Since this seems anti-business (as employees can change), I feel like we're missing something. Any advice?

Thank you!

@WmJeanesMemLib ;

For this you would have to call Square Suport the number is in my Tag line.

I am having issues with your terminology for the Transfer.

"....Square seems to say we can't do that with an inactive/deactivated location?"

Location : In Square is a place for items to be sold, example addresses or mobile places.

I created my business with Square with one location.... the address.  I also went to create a Mobile location but also Deactivated it so I would only be charged for one Location for Square for Retail.

"Since this seems anti-business (as employees can change)"

Employees can change but the Owner of a Square account is not an Employee.   The Owner gives their SS number or EIN if a Business for tax purposes.  In this case Square cannot just transfer the ownership if the EIN or SS is different.

For example I setup a C-Corp as the owner of my Square account.  If tomorrow I step down as the President of my C-corp and give my C-corp to my son, he becomes the president but the EIN in Square Stays the same.  So if your Librarys EIN was used you can Transfer administrator from exemployee to a new employee since the EIN would stay the same.  If the EIN or SS# changes you need to start a NEW Square account.  You can transfer all the Customers, and Catalog Items etc but this should be under the Library Name and EIN.  Now if the ein is under the Library you can go here :

https://app.squareup.com/dashboard/business/about-my-business

This is in your Business and Settings section of your Square Dashboard, under My Business > About

Here is what it says about Transferring a business because of Personel or Employee changes...

Transfer business

This transfers the business to a new person within your organization. To process payments, Square needs to verify their identity. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to process payments during the transfer process.

NOTE: This feature is not supported when selling a business.

Hi @WmJeanesMemLib, thank you for your post. Welcome to the Seller Community!

For a bit more clarification, what is the exact message you are seeing when trying to Transfer Business? As well as, are you trying to transfer the business to a new owner?

I also wanted to send over the directions on Transferring Account Ownership, just in case!

  1. Go to Account & Settings > Business information from your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Click About my business > Transfer business.
  3. Fill out the form to verify your identity, including your legal name, date of birth, and last four digits of your SSN. Enter the new account owner’s email address. Square will send an identity verification form to the new owner.
  4. Check the box for Transfer of Account Agreement, then click Agree & Continue.
  5. Read the Transfer of Account Agreement and click OK.
  6. Check your email inbox for the automated Transfer Account Confirmation email.
  7. Click Confirm Transfer. Note: You cannot undo an account ownership transfer. Once the transfer is complete, the only way to regain ownership of the account is to complete another transfer.

A bit more clarification would be helpful and we can take a deeper look for you!

Thank you to @Candlestore for jumping in on this one, as well!
