Can't read Square gift cards on square reader

I was forced to buy the new generation square stand since the latest update wouldn't work on my old one. This new one has no mag stripe reader, but of course I have thousands of dollars worth of (Square) gift cards out there in the hands of my customers. So I ordered the free mag stripe reader that we could plug in when needed. IT DOES NOT WORK 90% of the time. Plus, when we plug it in the chip reader disconnects and sometimes won't reconnect when we remove the plug in, so we have to reboot, while the customer stands and waits. Now we are reduced to running gift cards by typing in the actual numbers. And the new gift cards I'm ordering are just as useless since they have QR codes that this stand can't read. Anyone find a solution to this ridiculous design fiasco? Why Apple? Why?

That sounds frustrating. When using the magstripe reader, is it giving you an error message? 

Also, please try these basic Square magstripe and Square Stand troubleshooting steps.

No error. It just doesn't read the gift card. And then when we unplug the reader, sometimes the chip reader doesn't reconnect. The question is - why design a stand that can't read gift cards at all? I Just ordered new gift cards from Square. They have QR codes, but this stand won't be able to read them either. Why did anyone think this is a good idea?
