Day Trading Attention: Social Media Impact on Your Business

Hey Readers,

We’ve now finished up reading Day Trading Attention by Gary Vaynerchuk, and we’ve covered everything from your business’ use of social media, the basics of covered the basics of why attention matters, went through the The Modern Advertising Framework, did an overview of the current Social Media Platforms, held a social media consultation, and shared the final takeaways from the last chapters.

So let’s talk about how you’ve implemented what you’ve learned from the book. I’d love to hear what ideas resonated the most with you, what you learned, what it’s been like to actually enact those changes, and how they’ve impacted your business.

I know there is so much to digest and implement. This book really is more academic text book than what we’ve read in the past and, as such, requires working through it rather than a straight read.

In light of that, @Pesso and I hope you’ll join us for our live Tactic Talk event about social media use in your business. Bring questions you may have, wins, any “lightbulb moments,” or even frustration – we wanna hear from you!

Don’t forget to RSVP to Tactic Talk: Social Media, a new version of our Book Club Live Discussions that we’re holding Tomorrow, Tuesday October 29th, to chat together about the social media strategies. Hope to see you there!

We’d love to hear your answers in the comments:

  • What resonated the most with you from this book?
  • What have you done in your business as a result of reading this book?
  • What effects have you felt on your business so far?
  • Where do you still feel lost or frustrated after reading this book?

Don’t forget to:

Happy reading!

1.  What resonated most with me is that FB is a gold mine, always use a photo or video and schedule your content.  (I already do all of this and only use FB.)

2.  Nothing.  I hate to say this, but this book wasn't super helpful for me.  We're serviced based.  A lot of what's in here just doesn't work for us.  We're a mom and pop shop.  We don't have employees.  We don't need to be growing, we're working towards retirement.  Also, a lot of what he details was just simply too much for my brain to handle.  I skimmed about 2/3 of the book.  I think if I were 20 years younger and still growing our business, I would have engaged with this book more.

3.  Again, none.

4.  I'm glad I'm not lost.  I'm right where I want to be with my social.  Case in point:  I posted several times through October about women in trades and used real photos of women working, giving photo credit of course.  Welding, machining, HVAC, plumbing, etc.  I watch my results daily.  I check my insights several times after each post.  They all got a little attention, some more than others and I always share them to groups.  These I shared in women's groups as well as others.  But.... ONE post that showed an alluring woman welding, got... guess how many hits????

Over 2600.

Because that content sells.  That post proved it.  And she was wearing jeans and a muscle shirt, nothing revealing.  I posted all of my posts to the same groups.  But that one got attention.  Although I feel like that is negative attention, being that I'm female, it still hit up my page and increased my results dramatically.  The last post I had that was super high was over a year ago.  It went over 10k.  Sure, I'd love it if all my posts got that many hits on a regular basis, but again, that's not what I'm after.  I'm after consistent posting and I've been doing that since Sept of 2023.

That's all totally fair, @CareyJo  -- not every strategy is for every business, and I'm so grateful that you still gave it a shot and shared your thoughts throughout our session!

It is really disappointing that that kind of content gives the biggest boost, but you're right, the goal isn't just high numbers of views and engagement -- it's the right kind of engagement from the right kind of audience. Even if it's low, if you're getting the people who you want to see your stuff, that's a success!

First thing... apologies for not being able to make the discussion.  I had a medical issue I had to take care of so it took priority.  To answer the questions you posed:

  • What resonated the most with you from this book?
I now understand why I have been encountering a lot of posts that seem to be a mismatch for the platform I found them on.  People are attempting to use the same post across different platforms and although it sort of works, it also doesn't.  The time investment it takes to format for a specific platform it will be seen on is invaluable.

The other takeaway I had was it's ok to focus on just a handful of platforms. Since I'm a solopreneur, I don't have staff taking care of my social media.  Plan out what I want to focus on, take a day to implement, and schedule when the posts will go live so it's all done ahead of time, ready and waiting. Otherwise, it's going to drive me crazy trying to work in a post of the day type thing. And format for the platform it will appear on even if it's the same content from another platform.

  • What have you done in your business as a result of reading this book?
I am attempting to plan my posts ahead of time so it's not so much on the fly. I'm planning on incorporating videos into my feeds next year.  I don't have the time right now to work it right now.

  • What effects have you felt on your business so far?
I've had an uptick in online sales with no decernable (specific) source so it's going to be hard to pinpoint what worked and what didn't.

  • Where do you still feel lost or frustrated after reading this book?
There most sincerely isn't enough time in a day to focus on social media in addition to everything else I have to do this time of year.  Dina was right, this book was more academic and required working through it versus just reading it to put the information to work.  I have tons of paperclip markers for areas to go back to for a deeper dive later on. I think what I'm going to do is put a proverbial pin in it until I can circle back around to this when I have more flexible time to thoughtfully address my social media footprint.

So sorry to hear that you had a medical issue, @bonny -- I hope you're doing ok!

These are such great points -- I also never knew how important creating content that is specific to the strengths of each platform is. But you're right, it takes so much more work to create and post on each platform!

I'm glad that you've been working on creating & scheduling in advance and I hope that takes some of the pressure off.

Hooray for an increase in sales! Hopefully it continues and the social stuff can help boost it even more.

Looking forward to hearing more about your video journey next year when you have more time to spend on it -- can't wait to hear more of your progress with it!
