Returning to Stock Items that were not Paid (100% discount)

We operate a business that is required to pay excise taxes (not sales tax) monthly for products taken out of inventory and then opened for smaller than single unit sales/samples. The single unit sale has to be recorded to take it out of inventory and record it for excise tax payment, but we discount it 100 percent. On occasion, incorrect product removals have been recorded. These mistakes have to be returned to inventory and the sale "refunded". When the sale is viewed in our Square account, there is no option to issue a refund - I'm guessing because the payment method was "Record other payment". How do we return these items to stock and negate the sale so excise tax it not paid on them?

I created a Discount 100% Donation before.  When I ring up an item(s) and apply this discount.  The charge comes to $0.00 and Square states the Minimum for a Credit card is $1.00.  So I do Cash not Other as the payment method.  This lets me Print out a receipt for the organiztion.  If they Return the item I can Scan or lookup the transaction.  Do a refund of retuned Item(s). this is what my Transaction Record looks like from a Chrome Browser in my Transactions Tab:  The Payment was as you see for $0.00 as Cash, and the Refund was also for $0.00.

Not sure if you can choose Other for a Refund as you mentioned like if they paid by Check for your 100% off?  This is why if the sale is for $0.00 choose Cash not Other.  So for how to edit the previous transaction, there is no way and this might be a Cost of Schooling to learn from as when 100% off choose cash and not Other.  Since I do not choose other for any of my sales I can not check this out on my system.  But there should be a Transaction in your system showing Other for that date or amount that you should be able to refund the items, which would return it to stock, and negate that transaction.

Hey there @bmlieber.  I had the same general thoughts as @Candlestore.  I too have a 100% discount set up and use it.  I pay such donations/transactions to cash, even though they are $0.  So far, the VERY FEW times I’ve had to reverse one of those, I was able to do that.
