CRV Issues

I'm wondering if anyone knows if square has added a CRV option or is planning on it?

California has to add CRV to wines started Jan 1st. And that will be an annoying problem.

I've also, noticed that this has been a request to square for about 7 years. lol

This is the way Wine Stop "solved" this "CRV problem":

Goal was to add the correct CRV fee to every item without having to click on every item and/or bring up the item list more than once for each modifier.

So, here we go:

STEP 1: GO TO MODIFIERS

Set up every modifier you need in your store:

CRV $0.05 (under 24 oz)

CRV $0.10 (24 oz plus)

CRV $0.25 (boxes, bladders, etc.)

Also for any 4 or 6 packs/combos, etc:

CRV $0.20 (4 x $0.5)

CRV $0.30 (6 x $.05)

etc.

STEP 2: STILL N MODIFIERS

Click on "Apply to Items" and select JUST ONE item that needs to be charged $0.05.

Do the same with all of the other CRV categories. Always select JUST ONE item.

STEP 3: GO ITEM LIBRARY

Select YOUR $0.05 item.

Scroll down to MODIFIERS.

Click on the 3 dots to the left. It brings up a pop up with 2 choices:

- Customize

- Remove from item

Select CUSTOMIZE

A new page will load

Select "Required Modifiers: 1"

Select "Maximum Modifiers: 1"

DO NOT check off PRE-SELECTED next to the CRV amount. The reason why you shouldn't check-off PRE-SELECTED bc all of your online items will show prices that INCLUDE the CRV fee. However, the CA CRV rules state that consumers need to SEE what they are paying for. By not checking-off PRE-SELECTED the TRUE retail price will show online.

At the bottom of this page, select:

"Apply This Config To Other Items"

Select and check off all of the items that need to be charged $0.05.

Next: Select your $0.10 modifier and repeat the above.

Do the same with all of your other modifiers.

From now on you won't be able to ring up any items unless you click/highlight the CRV fee. So it's impossible to miss adding CRV!

This is the absolut fasted way to cope with the CA CRV  requirements regardless of the number of items you carry in your store.

And if any of these fees ever change one only has to change the amount of each Modifier. That's it.

This 100% works, if you key-in your transactions and also on your Square website.

Online:

Prosecco $21.9                                                                              $530.16

($22.09 ea) x 24

+ CRV (0.10 ea)

9.5% Sales Tax                                                                                $  50.37

POS:

Champagne $79.99                                                                           $80.09

+ CRV

9.5% Sales Tax                                                                                   $  7.61

Next, we'll test it when we scan the item.

If you've turned on "Skip detail screen" then you don't have to highlight any items. When you scan it it will automatically be added on the right.

Side note: Cute store. Congrats on your third location.

Also, if you turn off "Customer can only select one modifier" in the Modifier settings.
Then it will eliminate the option for them to pick.

So when someone makes the purchase on your site. You won't have that "Required to add CRV" part anymore. It will automatically add it. AND it works if you are integrated on door dash.

After looking further into "turning on/off PRE-SELECTED", I noticed that this has different impacts on the various ways of ringing up a sale: online, scanning, keying. By NOT turning on PRE-SELECTED when you key-in all of your sales, it will added the correct CRV amount to the total. However, online it will only add a single charge if multiple bottles are purchased. Uneal! I'll look into this further. Why hasn't Square come up with a proper CRV solution? What CRV is for us, is what tipping is for restaurants. It's part of running a liquor store - now in more and more states. In an online chat with Square we were told "Looks like our platform isn't what you're looking for." WOW! How do you square that statement with this: https://squareup.com/us/en/point-of-sale/retail/liquor-wine-brewery Please, Square, solve this problem! One setting should add the correct CRV fee/s regardless how you sell a bottle of wine on Square.

James,

We use Square for Restaurants and we don't have the options are are referring to. But today, I did an experiment and entered multiples of the same SKU, clicked on CRV, and Square added 10 cents to each item.

HOWEVER, the issue is that it adds to the price of the item and not as a separate line item. This is confusing as the customer now thinks we are charging more than our listed price.

Sorry to hear. Furthermore, the CA CRV regulations even spell out that it can't be "combined". CA consumers have the right to see what they are paying for. The fee needs also be taxed.

Why is this still a Square issue in 2023? History: "In 1971, Oregon passed the first bottle bill (also known as a deposit law) in the United States, requiring refundable deposits on all beer and soft drink containers. By 1986, ten states (over one-quarter of the U.S. population) had enacted some form of beverage container deposit law or bottle bill." Wikipedia

We all need to have this fixed. Like yesterday.

Square has some splainin' to do. 🙂

@WineSneakWhat drives me nuts is that square should be help responsible, but we are the ones stressing over it.
Are we literally the only stores that are having this issue?
And these guys are such BS that we literally can't do anything about it.
Recall a few months ago when their system went down for an entire day and they did NOTHING.

@_Violetand @j.j say absolutely nothing.

This is phenomenal, my biggest problem though is we offer discounts if they purchase a certain amount of wine bottles or if they are club members and now the discount is also being applied to the CRV that is programmed into the item. This is a nightmare! We also process orders that are being shipped out of state and I can't turn that off to process an order without it and include the other states out of state tax correctly 😕 Square, HELP US OUT

Yes! I added a CRV modifier on Jan 1st and made it active on my wines and then noticed that in a wine club sales receipts the item, a bottle of wine, which is sold to a club member with 25 % discount means that the modifier (CRV charge of $.10 per bottle) is now being discounted to $.08. This means that I will have to make up the .02 per bottle sold to pay the State when I report the sales. This is unacceptable. I also am concerned that as a modifier, the CRV charge is now COUNTED AS INCOME to my business.  This is also unacceptable. It should be rung up on a separate line on the invoice, like a Bed Tax charge or sales tax. I believe it is part of the law for the CRV fee to be identified separately. SQUARE needs to fix these issues asap!

I did not mark this as best answer because it is not a resolution of the problem. This is just winging it.
We have 4000 items. There is no way I'm doing this for every single one.

It's been months since this issue has been on for months. Why has square not resolved it?
They keep making updates that don't matter to wood related businesses, but barely anything in regards to us.

Two EXTREMELY URGENT tasks to fix immediately:

- Item option: Cannot be discounted

- Taxable CRV fees

This isn't anything out of the ordinary to asked for.

When can we expect to have this up and running?

The taxability needs to be optional.  I'm pretty positive I read that CRV is taxable in California.  I'm not sure about other states.

Yes, CRV is considered part of the cost of a product. Hence it needs to be taxed - in California.

Hi all! Curious if anyone has come with a solution to this? After going down many rabbit holes on forums and attempting to contact customer support I am still left without a solution to adding CRV as a line item. AH!

I haven't found anything at all.
What's extra annoying is that they do updates without announcing it anywhere.
