Sub Categories

Sub Categories

I know this has been mentioned in the past.  I know you can use variations and modifiers and that you can have site subcategories online.  But I am a Pizza/Deli along with a Retail store.

I know you are looking for reasons why subcategories would be helpful so here I go.  For instance in my store I track cost in QuickBooks under major categories such as Grocery, Meat Dept, Lotto, Pizza/Deli etc. I use these as my major Roll up categories- See example of Grocery

Grocery-

   Produce

        Weighed

            items

        Non Weighed

             items

   Candy

       Candy Bars

            items

        Novelty

            items

        Truffles

             items

   Local Items

       Maple Syrup

           items

       Private label Spices

          items

   Pet products

      Food/Treats

         items

      Toys

         items

    Dairy

      Cheese

          items

      Milk

        items

You get the idea, when I break them down into individual categories then I have to export to Excell, rearrange my rows and add roll them up manually.

We are also Using Square for Restaurants to integrate our online Menu.  But I have to have all the menu categories in seperatly so they show on the Menu correctly and I can have correct tickets print to the kitchen but when it comes to reporting it would be nice to be able to roll up all the menu categories so I can see what the Restaurant did.  I know that is possible with Restaurants Plus but since we have both we need the retail tracking of Retail Plus.  So far I have been able to get everything to work together; with some workarounds, we have only had it a week.  But I do see reporting as an issue moving forward.

Thanks

Re: can you make subcategories

If you have at least one other category, you can create a subcategory within your Square Online website.

Head to your Square Online overview page > Items > Site Categories > click the + button next to a category.

After saving your changes, the new category will appear nested underneath the category you just selected on the Items > Site Categories page. Learn more about categories here.

I hope this helps, @hishersbling - and welcome to the Seller Community!

Re: can you make subcategories

Hi @coppermug84 👋 Thanks for reaching out! Happy to have you join us here on the Seller Community. Welcome!

We do not have any current plans to implement a sub-category system. We feel that the implementation of Variations and Modifiers offers these same features of potential sub-categories, and allow for trackable iterations of existing items.

We would love to hear more about what you would use sub-categories for! How specifically would sub-categories be beneficial to your business? - what kind of items do you sell?

I will keep an eye out for your response!

heres an example

Disc golf

     long range drivers

     fairway drivers

     putt and approach

disc golf would be main category the others would be sub categories. would be nice if you could have multiple sub categories, like click on long range and be able to have another set of sub categories like speed, glide, etc.

this idea will not work, I would need subcategories also and then the items in the subcats will have their own variations. its hard for me to think why there isn't subcategories, its a basic thing for retail.

Yea!!!!! How do you not have subcategories?!?! (Variations are not sub-categories!!)

Maybe only work on getting subcategories as in option instead  of whatever "improvement" or "development" you are working on. Because nothing will likely be more valuable to us as sellers and by the way you, since you take a percentage of sales.

It's frustrating and honestly kind of sad as a POS company you cannot provide this basic option.

And by the way, you know it is very helpful to sub-categorize since this entire Support Center and Questions and etc are all sub-categorized, so we can easily find answers to our questions or the sad truth about the lack of basic options your system has to offer.

SO MAKE IT EASY FOR CUSTOMER TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS.

PLEASE GIVE US SUB_CATEGORIES  ASAP! Thanks.

YES AlphaDrugs!!  I am so frustrated that they don't respond and develop.  You have voiced it very well!

Yes I am still waiting for this option

We've been adding more and more products lately and now we are having issues categorizing everything, We have some categories that have 100 plus items with variations in each that could easily get divided up better but cant seem to find much info on this feature. Is this possible? are there any updates coming up with subcategories?

Hi @GBTFC👋 I moved your question to this thread where @RHatch gives a workaround!

@nika, @RHatch does not provide any real workaround for @GBTFC or myself for that matter. This is a glaring omission for any capable POS system software. Many have expressed frustration over the challenging user experience presented by this flat category model. There is clearly a need for this functionality as demonstrated in numerous posts in this thread. Is there any chance that Square will ever implement this useful feature?

Hi @ShrewsburyPets,

We currently do not have a public timeline for our feature requests or new releases. We appreciate the patience and definitely see how it could benefit your business model. Our teams are constantly looking through our seller's feedback to make necessary improvements, and we will be sure to let you know if anything ever changes or if new updates are released.

I'd also like to see this feature added. Nested or Parent Categories would make it a lot easier for me to put my inventory online, not to mention be able to find things more quickly in my point of sale.
