Is it possible to apply a coupon or discount code without it being made public on the website?

Good day! We are trying to apply a discount code or coupon code that would be used exclusively by our membership. This code would be provided to members when they take out a membership or renew. This code is not meant to be displayed to the public on our online store. The code is to be applied on most merchandise, but not all.

I have been back and forth with Square Support as to the best option, only to be told that neither option will work for us. Most recently I created a coupon code only to have the code go public on our page. When I inquired about this, I was told this is a feature that has been recently made available, however it is not an optional feature.

Has anyone created a code that is not made public on your retail site that can be applied to merchandise? Thank you in advance.

Hi @WIHS 👋 thanks for your post.

Square Online coupons are typically shared directly with customers and aren’t prominently displayed on your site. Customers apply these coupons at checkout to receive a discount.

On the other hand, Discounts are visible on your website and are automatically applied to eligible items.

It seems like you might have set up Discounts, but Coupons could be a better option for your needs.

You can learn how to set up Coupons here > Create coupons from Square Marketing

  1. From your Square Marketing Overview page, go to Coupons.
  2. Select Create coupon.
  3. Enter details like a coupon name (code), type, the items it applies to, and active dates.
  4. Select Activate.
  5. Share the code with customers by selecting ••• and choosing your share option.

From your Square Online site, customers will enter the coupon code at checkout, so choose a code that makes sense with the kind of discount you’re offering. You can use any combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Codes aren’t case-sensitive, which means the coupon codes of “SAVE10” and “save10” will both apply the same discount.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
