After Oct 28 my buyers can no longer use PayPal

Today I received a notice from Square saying after Oct 28 2024 they will no longer have PayPal as an option for my customer to use for payment to purchase my product on line.  Does anyone have any details on this and why they would make that change.  If this is true it will have a large effect on my sales.  Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

I can certainly provide some additional context from the Square Online team regarding this change: 

"Two of our biggest priorities for Square Online are making its experiences more integrated with the rest of Square, and improving reliability and speed. We are rolling out a series of changes to the product this year that will help us make significant improvements for both of these. You can learn more about this broader effort here.  

Unfortunately, these improvements aren’t compatible with our integration with PayPal. We know that most Sellers using Square Online today don’t accept PayPal, and we believe most buyers visiting Square Online sites are comfortable using one of our other convenient payment methods, like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Given this, we are choosing to invest in making our ordering experiences even more reliable and remarkable rather than build a new PayPal integration at this time. 

If you believe PayPal acceptance is critical to your business, you can consider moving your online business to one of Square’s ecommerce partners like Wix, where you can connect both Square and PayPal as payment gateways."

Hey @tonemanguitar.  I can only sort of answer the first part of your enquiry.  Square has not divulged their reasons for this and honestly they don’t have to.  Since PayPal is a competitor in the card processing world, I’ve always been surprised that Square allowed payments this way, anyway.  I’ve never seen any website/store host that had their own card processing that allowed cards to be processed by anyone but them. 

 

That being said, is this a good move on Square’s part?  Only time will tell.  I’m sure they thought it through and came to the decision they felt was best for them as a company.  Also, they do have shareholders who have more than a little sway in decisions like this.  But, as this is a business decision, they don’t have to explain themselves.  I definitely wouldn’t expect to hear any more about this, since ultimately the “whys” don’t matter.  The fact is that they are ending their relationship with PayPal.

 

My other guess is that PayPal was charging Square higher fees than they wanted to pay to use them, or that PayPal no longer wanted Square to get a cut of their fees.  Either is perfectly plausible as a reason.

 

As for us as sellers, it doesn’t have to have much of an effect on our sales.  Most customers can just switch to using their cards through Square rather than using their cards through PayPal.  It will be up to us to communicate with our customers (especially on our websites) with popups and such, so that no one is surprised — at least not for long.

I had a customer who paid with PayPal seven days after October 28. The payment went through and is in my Paypay account.

I spoke to two customer service reps from Square, and neither one could tell me why it happened or if it would happen again. Everything looks legit, like any other PayPay payment. Can anyone explain why this happened when Square no longer accepts payments from PayPal?
