404 errors

I've lost so much business this year. I set up another location since I have some of my items available locally. Now the items show up as error when clicked. At least in mobile where most people shop from, and it's not consistent. I've had friends check and they get the same, at least on mobile. I can't keep losing business and I'm glad I haven't switched to a paid account yet.

So frustrating.

Clearly there is an issue if inventory is assigned to a 2nd location but isn't showing up on her site.

I was able to get the 404 error as well.

I only have one location so not sure how best to address how it's showing up online. @maxpete are you aware?

They show up but when you click on them to go to the item page you get 404 error. It's not consistent either- some do it some don't. Some do it one time and then not at other times. I've also noticed it you do the hover 'quick shop' it shows. That's not on mobile though. I thought it might be an issue with Chrome so tried FF and all was well  and then it wasn't. It does it on FF too. Just the ones at a new location I set up.

@tessa

Good morning! I see your still having issues, I am new at this so my advice may not be exactly what you want to hear. Sounds like you have a DNS issue. I had a problem with mine when I first built my site. I was frustrated, I reached out to support and explained issue and literally 5 mins they had me going. That was my experience. I hope this helps a little. Have an amazing day!

I escalated this issue to our Square Online Support Team. They determined that a Support Ticket was needed in order for our engineers to further investigate. Someone from their team will be reaching out to you by email with more details, once they have a solution in place.

Yep, I just saw the email today. I'm kinda wondering if square isn't working with all browsers.

@tessa This is just a thought and hopefully it might help. I was on your site and compared pages that did load and pages that gave a 404. In Chrome I turned on developer tools and noticed the pages that loaded, the photos were jpegs. The pages that gave me the error the photos were pngs.

Square does accept jpeg and png files for images, but a png files contains more information and can be bigger in size.

My thinking is this. You say it happens on mobile devices, but sometimes they load and sometimes they don't. I think the combination of a larger png file size and cell reception could be causing your problem.

Below are screenshots from Item 247 Arbor Beanie. The first photo shows the 404 error, the second photo shows how long it is taking to get a response from the server, causing the timeout.

Hopefully this will help, it's the only thing I could really find.

Wow, that's great! And very interesting because they're photos I've used all along. They are not new uploads. I'll play with it and upload new ones after checking extension. For clarity, it's not just happening on mobile, but also my laptop and I had a friend look and she saw the same. My sister, iOS mobile, said she can see them fine but I don't trust her to know what I'm taking about- clicking on each item. She's also very tech illiterate. Lol.

Thank you so much! I'll see if this works!

So update to this is it happens in all the browsers I've tried on both mobile and laptop. The quick shop on hover works fine. You can see the description and add to cart but if you click on the item to go to item page, you see a 404. This started after I added a second location to my online store, or at least this is when I noticed it. I did this because I have items at a physical location and needed to set these to 'pickup' so no one purchased online. If they were sold downtown and I didn't know, that would suck 😐

So the only items the 404 occurs with are those set to the second location.

As one commenter suggested, it might be that the photos are .png and those that don't have the issue are .jpeg. That is odd because I used photos I already had for those items. No new uploads, except on items I added as they're finished. Also odd they are png to being with because my photos are usually never png. In any case, I appreciate the suggestion and looking into it, @rtfulk. I switched out photos on the wayfarer wrap, making sure they're jpg first. It still shows the error but I'm going to try switching all the png out once I find them. I'll do this after giving tech a bit to see what the problem is.

Thanks everyone!

Great to hear! Thanks for the follow up, @tessa

Did changing the images from .png to .jpeg, as @rtfulk suggested, do the trick?

I don't think so because I only did one of the items- removing photos and replacing then with jpeg. I wanted to wait until tech had a bit to investigate.

A new update though today. Some of the items in the slide show above available items on main shop page show the 404. And so do the same items.

Shoot, now some of the items in the slide show at top show a 404. 😑 and the items at the physical location are also showing the error again.

I edited the note I had above my available items warning about the 404 error. And on the home page.

So it seems whenever I make a change I get the 404 errors again.

Hello @tessa 👋

Just wanted to check in and ask if you are still experiencing issues?

When I visited your website, your Home page had a note explaining the 404 errors were no longer an issue.

I also tried hovering over some of your items and opening both the Quick shop and item page and had no issues.

If you are still experiencing problems please let me know what you are seeing and the browser you are using. I'll be happy to take a look.

Thank you.

@tessa When I saw your post that the errors was fixed and I got excited for you, then I saw you were having trouble again. Hopefully tech support can get it straightened out. There’s nothing more frustrating than when you try everything and it still doesn’t work.
