I have set up a new Square Online shop moving from Wix, beginning to regreat the choice but anyway. I ahve set up a load of products and today published the site and just checked it and when you select an option from the dropdown list, it does not update the main picture. Some products I have set 2 or pictures for an option is this the problem? Picture shows product with pictures allocated to variations.

I'm sorry to hear our support team wasn't able to assist.
Can you share your website's URL so that I can take a closer look ? What you experience might be due to the layout you choose to display your items. If you've picked a layout that already displays all the images on the item page, it's expected behaviour for the main image to remain the same regardless of the option you select.
To edit your items layout, access your Online Overview Page:
- In Website, go to Edit Website.
- Click on Home to view the dropdown.
- Scroll down to Item Pages and click on any item, then select Item Details.
- Under Customise, select the relevant layout and Publish your website to update it.
Note that the change will apply to all item pages.
I did the test on my website and you'll need to select either of the following layouts to have the image relevant to the option display on the page:

Tech support today said first it was my browser, but deleted cache no change, chrome up todate.
Then said my pictures are the wrong size and / or shape.
What is the real issue, getting very close to calling time on Square after 14 days utter rubbish, does anything work?
