How do I apply a coupon (% off) to all items in a category, not just the most expensive one?

We sent a text messaging campaign to advertise a single category as 15% off.  The intent is that all items purchased in that category are on sale.  Unfortunately, the result is that only one item from that category is discounted.   We are trying to sell down that particular category, and the customer expects that, as advertised, ALL "X" are on sale with this coupon.

can you post what your coupon setup looks like?  Just looking at the settings I see in the description that is auto filled in it says "an item" so that is implying a single item of that category will be on sale.

you could set up a auto discount instead but that would be for everyone not just people with the digital coupon.

@FriendlyNatives @VanKalkerFarms I have found a workaround that would still let you use the coupon feature in Marketing.

If you apply the coupon to specific item instead of category when creating the campaign (or the coupon), you'll be able to add multiple items. Here's an example on my test account:

I understand it's not ideal to manually add all items from a category, but hopefully this workaround will work for you 🙂. Let me know if you have any questions.

unfortunately, looking at that wording it is just going to be the highest price from that category and there doesn't seem to be a way to let it be all items from a category.

Yes, and this seems like it would be a feature that would be widely used.  A lot of retailers put certain categories on sale.  Trees, pottery, Christmas leftovers, shoes, menswear, appetizers, whatever.  And all items in that category are on sale.  What's the correct forum for feature requests?

I agree.  Let me loop in a Square mod and see if they have any input.  @isabelle could you tag in someone with marketing to see if what I am reading is correct that there isn't a way to make the whole category on sale.

Hi @FriendlyNatives, thank you for posting.

@VanKalkerFarms, you are correct (thanks for assisting by the way 🙂). Unfortunately, there isn't a way to apply a category-based coupon to all the items of that category. The coupon would only apply to the highest priced item. This would be a feature request which you can file here.

As @VanKalkerFarms mentioned above, you could create an automatic discount. If you could confirm how you sell your articles (in person, online or both?), I'd be happy to provide more information about this workaround to make it work with your particular setup.

Let me know if you have any questions !

Thank you.  In person, we are a brick and mortar garden center.  We sent a coupon to text message subscribers that all trees were 15% off with the coupon.  If an automatic discount would apply to all transactions in this category, regardless of the coupon, then we negate the point of the coupon.

the way it stands currently then your best solution available is to discount it manually when they present the coupon.

Does seem weird that it auto limits the category and it isn't a checkbox to click to limit it vs the whole order.

Awesome life hack @Lou8 , where there's a will there's a way.  You would just need to edit the description because it adds every item to the description.  But at least that way it will be automatic for the coupon code.

I'll need to make a mental note of that.

Good shout @VanKalkerFarms ! The description of the coupon sets itself to the first item I add on my end. But I'm testing on a UK account which could explain the difference.

Glad to hear you can make use of this hack 🙂.

Was there ever a request put in to apply it to all items in a category? We have over 85 items in the category that we would like do offer the coupon on, so it's a bit crazy to look up each item and add it all manually.

Thanks for asking this question as we are having the same issue.

This is a really frustrating missing feature. It is something that worked fine in the online vouchers before migrating it over. Huge backwards step  and there is no chance we will add all the items manually, that is utter madness and not worth our time. Think we need to look for a new backend if this is the best that Square can do.

totally agree- not sure why it is taking so long for Square to fix this issue.
